How to Talk to Teens about Insults

Category: DevotionalPolycarp @ 9:26 am

That was one of the search terms that brought people to my site this week, and it got me to thinking. I used to teach Sunday School calls to some young teenagers. Several of this young ones had a problem with name calling, insulting, and gossiping, so I found this nifty idea that I employed. It worked -  at least in my class.

I gave each a piece of paper and asked them write down every name that they called others. I then asked them to write down any gossip that they might have said. Needless to say, the page filled up with slander, insults, and other oddities. I figure if they can say it, then they could write it. They quickly became embarassed and some found trouble writing them down.

Then I had them flip the paper over and write two words:

“Jesus Christ”

Then I read them this:

And the King will answer and say to them, “Assuredly, I say to you, inasmuch as you did it to one of the least of these My brethren, you did it to Me.’ (Matthew 25:40 NKJV)

No more insults in the class, and I hope no more insults and gossip outside the class as well.
