Bitsy Griffen points us to Russell Moore’s latest post in which the topic was standing during the reading of Scripture. To be honest, I have not done that for a while, loosing it along the way, somewhere. Bitsy quotes Russell:
Standing alongside the people as we read the text is a cue to me of both the gravity of the moment and the fact that I am not only speaking but being spoken to by the Word of Christ.
The Scripture is the bread by which we are fed, but do we honor it? Of course there are different versions of ’standing.’ I have stood with the congregation during a reading of a passage, and if called on to read individually, I have stood alone.
We stand for the pledge of allegiance, for the Star Spangled Banner, for men and for women, and we stand and cheer if our favorite sports team scores. Maybe we should stand when the Scripture is read?

That's religious …. what's the point? It's all a matter of the heart!

Oh, indeed, but if it is a matter of the heart, when standing for the Scriptures, while not required, would perhaps show a heart towards honoring God? Granted, if one does not, that does not mean that that person does not have a heart towards the Scriptures.
