At Dr. Robert Cargill’s prestigious blog, Chris Heard brought up the point about the SBL-Biblioblogger affiliation:
And a second, serious question: if Fred Phelps starts a blog, posts about the Bible, and pays SBL dues, he’s eligible to put the “Bilblioblog/SBL Affiliate” badge on his blog. Do you really want to grant academic legitimacy to Fred Phelps or any other dilettante who happens to pay SBL dues and slap a JPEG on his sidebar?
Unfortunately, I believe that Chris has some areas of concern. A few weeks ago, a crazy squirrel crashed a random photo and suddenly, he starting appearing everywhere. (Don’t think that this is random – they are out to get us.) Unfortunately, the SBL-Biblioblogger Logo has started to do the same thing. It’s very disconcerting:
First, I noticed it on David Ker’s site (Frankly, I think he deserved it):
Then Doug was ‘punk’d.’ I suspect it was because Doug refuses to post badges – ‘Badges, I don’t need no stinkin’ badges‘
Next, it literally attacked the Association of Unaffiliated Bibliobloggers:
But, the grand pooba of Biblical Scholarship, Steven L. Anderson, has apparently earned his logo by memorizing over 100 chapters of the Bible – that’s the King James Bible to you buddy:
What’s really scary is that Fred Phelps, true to Chris’ concerns, has indeed embraced the SBL-Biblioblog logo. Reports close to him indicate that while God hates everyone but Westboro Baptist Church, Fred has heard that the Biblioblogosphere is a field ripe for missionary activity. Further, I believe that he wants to join the steering committee, learning at the feet of Dr. West.
For some, such as a real Czar, Vladimir Putin, the badge is a symbol of honor and power. He, of course, has attributed his leadership style to the above mentioned Dr. West. Here, Putin is pictured holding the logo as he orders the death of every cat in Russia.
The archivists as the SBL had come across this picture, some 1000 years old, of Mohammad, who undoubtedly was a prophet, as he prophetically announced the SBL-Bibloblog affiliation. We note the addition of the bomb which explains the way the community as reacted to the news of the affiliation.
And speaking of the archives, intrepid interns have discovered that a certain Zwingli read from the pages of the SBL-Biblioblog handbook (which partially explains why the Reformation got so sidetracked under his care.)
But, the most startling of all pictures that have been found, is the one of a certain Rudolf ‘Rudy B.’ Bultmann. It’s being discussed whether or not it is actually there, and if it is, is it real, and further, how would Bultmann rearrange the data to totally destroy the message.

Thank you, thank you kindly. Now, on to more scholarly pursuits, as much as naivety will allow.
