Taking songs and "Christianizing" them is absolutely great if it ends in a self-conscious parody like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tTYr3JuueF4

Matthew who? Must have been before my time?

It's interesting to read what Uncle Isaac went through with the very first hymns.

Hey. I've got Larry Norman in my record collection. As in vinyl.

Do you know how young Matthew Ward looked when With Footnotes was released? Amy Grant giving best wishes to her homeroom in high school is a hoot. Then there was the Phil Keaggy concert where he ended up accompanying the audience on "What a Day" because we were doing it so well.

I remember when CCM covered U2 as a Christian band back in the early 1980s.

The stuff like were a seeing on this blog would be enough to make Jesus turn over in his grave if he was still there. I'm sure it makes the Blessed Mother weep in Heaven.

Christianity and pop music has been wedded before. Of course, people tried to emulate Bach rather than the other way around, if you catch my drift.

I'm good with a lot of CCM. I love Rich Mullins, Andrew Peterson, Mitch McVicker, and several others.

As for lyric-changing, I agree with Robert ... it's a parody device. I did once turn "Total Eclipse of the Heart" into "Totally Dissed Noah's Ark" (and have since found that there are about ten trillion parodies with exactly that title online), but that was more funny than spiritual.

This is in the same category as those shirts that take some product's logo and change it into a pop-Christian slogan (my roommate in college really loved wearing his "God's Gym" t-shirt ... sigh ...).

It's kind of sad when someone doesn't realize that s/he's making him/herself a joke.

I don't much care for Christian pop music, and starting to care little for Southern Gospel. It has become the place for rejected country singers.

Changing lyrics like this is only good when it's for humor; trying to wring a serious message out of an Al Yankovic-style cover can't really be taken seriously.

The bigger question is why Christian pop music sucks so badly. Obviously I don't listen to this kind of music anymore, I totally used to have a subscription to CCM and was a HUGE CCM fan. Just for fun, my favorite bands were Third Day, Newsboys, and the very early MercyMe.
