The United Nations and Internet Censorship

While the United Nations may serve for good purposes, overall, any government given power on any level will seek more power. The United Nations thinks itself a Government and is seeking power.

I guess, the main issue was that it singled out a country.

Who really wants internet censorship? Look for who works on ACTA right now, part of it serves a similar purpose (see http://www.michaelgeist.ca/index.php?option=com_tags&task=view&tag=acta&Itemid=408 for example).

The US, EU, Japan, etc., they’re all working on it, and to make matters more interesting, it’s all in secrecy.

Internet censorship would stiffle one of the freedom which feeds all others, I believe, that of speech.

Sure, but the UN is the wrong culprit for that. What freedoms citizens are ensured (or not taken away, depending on the point of view) is a sovereign issue of the members. Luckily, the UN traditionally is weak on influencing countries when it comes to internal matters.
If you want to see a strong international organization, look at the WTO.

I wonder about the context of the video. How many other such posters do you see? (I can’t see any) Did the organizers agree with having a poster there at all?
There was surely a better reaction than throwing the poster to the ground, but the evidence is rather thin..

In my opinion, the real danger to freedom of speech and expression on the internet lies in the national governments. They’re known to be not too fond of it, they’re at a position to really do something about it (much more than throwing posters throughout the room), and they’re working hard on solving the issue for good
