Three Religions Meme

Category: Debate/DiscussionPolycarp @ 4:59 pm

Over the weekend, this meme no doubt raged through the biblioblogosphere, open to anyone. The rules are simple:

“The rules of the meme are to list three religions, apart from your own, that you find fascinating and why.”

Here is my three:

Judaism(s) – somewhere in there are roots of Christianity, and a better understanding of my faith.

Zoroasterism – I mean, it has it all. Monotheism. Good/Evil dualism. End the world cataclysmic. A Messiah.

Mandeans – Granted, they are Gnostic, but they claim to hold to the religion of John the Baptizer, so in my conservative mind, there is another link, although buried, to primitive Christianity.

Almost like a back to the basics approach. Now, consider yourself tagged.

  1. James F. McGrath says:

Drat! I can’t believe I didn’t include the Mandaeans as one of mine!!!

    • Polycarp says:

I shall bellow then with laughter.

I have been interested in their plight since some early news stories started trickling in from the front lines in Iraq. They seem like such a fascinating group.

  2. Newtaste says:

Jedi – would like to find out exactly what is The Force.

Prince Philip Movement – intrigued as to why a tribe in Vanuatu would worship as a god the husband of Queen Elizabeth II.

Jews for Jesus – the name says it all, just makes me want to find out more.

  3. Mitchell Powell says:

Judaism — its continued history of interpretation and reinterpretation of the scriptures in a format which combines rigidity and open dialogue makes for absolutely fascinating reading.

Hinduism — at least based on my conversation with Hindus, participants of this religion often can’t precisely say whether their religion is monotheistic or polytheistic, nor is there a defined dogma. And yet you seem to be Hindu or you’re not.

Bahai — this religion managed to convert (if that’s the right word) the noteworthy biblical scholar Thomas Kelly Cheyne, without his leaving (at least formally) his Christian church.
