Church members contribute $2.4 million on Warren’s plea

Commentator and blogger, Stuart, notified me of this:

The appeal to contribute towards a $900,000 deficit at Warren’s Saddleback Church was posted online Wednesday and a mammoth $2.4 million was garnered at the mega church by New Year’s Eve.

The radical giving
The response was so amazing that the church was inundated with men, women, and children filling donation cartons so quickly that they had to be emptied every 30 minutes.

“This is pretty amazing. I don’t think any church has gotten a cash offering like that off a letter,” an elated Warren said during a sermon at the church on Saturday.

Warren said that he was expecting more funds to pour in by hand and by mail in days to come. The priest declared that he will talk at length about the overwhelming response at the Sunday sermon, to be termed as ‘The Miracle’.

Referring to the fact that the feat was achieved by the hoi polloi, Warren said, “We’re starting the new decade with a surplus. It came from thousands of ordinary people. This was not one big fat cat.”

“It speaks volumes about you, the depth of commitment in this fellowship, and where God is taking us in 2010 – our 30th Anniversary year,” noted Warren.

2.4 million dollars in 2 days, if not more. 2.4 million dollars. Go ahead, let that sink in. 2.4 million dollars. In 2 Days. Can you imagine then the amount of money that could be used to helped the community?

    I’m curious if his “hoi polloi” could be galvanized to donate that much money in that little time to a worthy charity. While the prosperity of the church does guarantee the perpetuity of whatever community programs it sponsors, the funding that trickles down to that will be a fraction of that donated. How much of this debt owes to extravagant spending and bloated salaries? Will the church return the favor if a donor comes and says they need help because the economy left them in the hole?

    I tell you what, I don’t normally agree with P Z Myers for obvious reasons, but I do agree with him on this one:-

    Despair some more, people. Warren put out his call, and his flock of sheep answered with donations adding up to $2.4 million over one weekend. And he’s bragging that most of these were small donations from many people, not the largesse of a few rich individuals, and calling it a “miracle”.

    It’s a bit ironic that initially he’d said the shortfall was due to a poor economy and people having little to give. It’s revolting that he would then proceed to put the bite on the financially stressed members of his congregation, and that they’d then dredge up more of their money to hand over to the Saddleback simpleton. It wasn’t a miracle: a better word would be a fleecing.
