Race and Social Issues in Education

Jeremy has an excellent post on the myth of an open an easily accessible college education. He points out:

Do you want to know the percentage of people between the ages of 25 and 29 who have a college degree? … 29%. Most everyone? Not really. Actually, not by a long-shot. I’m not great with math but 29% essentially means that a little more than 7 out of every 10 young adults you look at do not have a college degree.

………….

The only thing that affects a person getting a degree is really wanting to learn? … Let’s consider the fact that of the 25 to 29 population 54.8% of Asians and Islanders get college degrees, 39.5% of Caucasians (non-Hispanic), 17.5% of Blacks, and 8.9% of Hispanics. If anyone can get a degree if they desire to learn, it follows then that Hispanics and Blacks simply do not want to learn.

Seems to me that statements made to the effect that anyone can get a degree if they really want to learn, etc… is either made as a race issue or elitism.

Anyway, go read the post, and please, let Jeremy know what you think. (Comments are closed on my post, but please leave him one)
