John, I don’t think bibliobloggers care all that much – some do, to be sure – about rankings. It is supposed to be fun, which I hope it is, if someone or some group seeks to maintain it.

As for blogging generally, I think ‘humour’ about suicide victims, homosexuals, Christians, atheists, fat people etc, is never ever funny. Except for Ed’s joke about the farmer… that wasn’t nasty was it Joel? While I’ll defend a friend’s rights to express their opinion, when I think that opinion has really crossed the line, I’ll say so. I miss his friendship but I won’t miss the regrettable ‘humour’.

funny stuff- the reason is simple, joel, et al. it really just got to be boring. and honestly, when something’s boring, i just dont think it’s fun. and lifes too short to do unfun stuff.

as to all the supposed reasons- they are all rubbish. i didnt quit because i felt bad about making fun of people. people without a sense of humor are of no concern to me at all. nor are their much vaunted ‘feelings’.

nor did i quit because of loftus or avalos or heard or cook or any of the others. i think my regular readers will know that im not afraid of nor cowed by doofy people. they think themselves far too important if they imagine for one deranged, deluded, mindless second that or their stupid ideas have any influence on any decision i make.

indeed, it’s flattering to know that hector the failed faith healer and loftus the failed pastor sit around all day thinking about me. apparently they’re obsessed. i just hope they dont show up at the house cooking a rabbit in a pot. i wouldnt be surprised, mind you. i just hope they don’t. cuz that would be even creepier than their sitting around thinking about me.

so, joel, all the guesses and loren’s silly supposition that i’ll be back to blogging are absurdities.

When we see an injustice we’ll say so, even to those we love. I think if Jim asked a few of those people who love him very much, he’d find that they think he has crossed the line too. I’ve seen Steph’s and Susan’s accusations splattered all across blogdom about this suicide posting, so I googled it and found the cached version. Personally it doesn’t seem hateful to me, or anymore judgmental than what Steph and Sue have posted. They seem to think he did it not because of guilt, but because the newspaper reported the wrong allegations. That is just as judgmental as what Jim posted….

I know, we aren’t accustomed to calling anything sin these days. It’s probably not even a word you’ve heard lately. But it’s real and it has dreadful, dreadful consequences.

Consider, for example, the Canadian teacher who worked at a Christian summer camp and who was let go for inappropriate behavior. His name was David Dewees. And yesterday he lay down on the subway tracks at High Park station as the train approached.

Guilt and shame, it seems, had their way with him but only because sin was set free of its cage and consumed him.

Dewees, 32, who taught Latin and English at Jarvis since 2003, was charged Thursday with Internet luring and invitation to sexual touching at the Christian-based Ontario Pioneer Camp near Huntsville between July 2008 and July 2009. He was out on $25,000 bail.

One of his friends had this to say

“Many will say this proves he was guilty,” he added. “And maybe he was. Or maybe he wasn’t guilty. His career and reputation ruined, maybe he was so embarrassed with his name and face plastered all over the media and felt that no matter what the outcome, people would always write him off as a pervert,” Robertson said in an e-mail to the Sun. “And maybe he just couldn’t deal with that.”

Killing yourself doesn’t clear your name or restore your reputation. It only solidifies them. Behold, the very high price of sin. Death.

Actually this is my outrageous desire for a public place on the internet. I would like to see recognition that it is okay to attack a belief of Christianity or atheism, that it is okay to attack liberals and fundamentalists.

I also want a place where it is not okay to call homosexuality sin, and say that women are designed for subordination and black peoplare better off in slavery. I want a place devoid of that. How bizarre. I want those who hold to these beliefs to go understand that you don’t smoke in public and you don’t express these beliefs outside of your own little corner.

I want a place where it is not alright to lie about people are attack their character with absurd name calling.

Why not take a piece of writing and attack that? Why attack people for the way they were born. I have had it with being subordinated. It is a disgusting filthy thing to do to another human being. and I hate the way homosexuals are treated also. You’re the only one making any accusations on this, so it only seems fit that the truth on what was written be published so everyone can judge for themselves. If you’d never mention it, I would of never of know of it. You got me curious and I found the truth to be something different than you stated. You’re the one posting this all over the internet. You seem to be on a crusade to make this something it isn’t. Nowhere in Jim’s post does he say the boys were raped. Jim has the facts right. Sure he implies that the solicitation of underage children is a sin, but I’d expect that from a minister, and yes I do agree with him on that. And as far as the guys sexual preference goes, it’s never mentioned by anyone but you.

Jim is speculating as to motive in a case that is a bout real people and very painful. He is acting God. Its time for Jim to step down from God for a while and give himself a break.

Thanks Newtaste for a bit of sanity here. Jim West is also a pastor, and he still blogs on his church blog. Let’s give him the place he wants and needs, some personal space. And if one does not like his personal views, again, just get over it and move on. Also, let the past be the past and move on.

I am not attacking anyone or even speaking about Dr. West. I am questioning your reasoning. It was clear that this man was not guilty and the paper cleared it up. Too late for him. Further, he knew that he was not guilty of the sin, so your statement of guilt and sin is way off. You seem to assume that because this man took his own life, he was guilty.

And this is something we all share as sinful human beings. Again only God really knows the interior of this dead man’s soul. I am certainly not making judgment. Sadly something drove this poor soul to suicide, we who are Judeo-Christians believe that this world is fallen and broken, morally and spiritually. This sad affair should remind us all how fragile human life can be. I myself have seen my share of death and dying as both a priest and pastor, and from the face of war.

I did not say sin was the “primary cause of suicide”, I said that we live in a fallen, and broken society. And sin is always within this preview. This is simply part of the doctrine of original sin. But I know you personally don’t believe in any doctrine of sin. That is your presupposition, but not that of most on this blog at least. Who would hold to some form of sinful humanity, as Christians.

If the blog post had been written by you I wouldn’t have been surprised. We are very saddened it was written by Jim (we being my friend here in this house). The blog post is no longer available but the news reports are, and perhaps you should read them, as well as comments before you attribute them to the wrong person, although I forgive you for that.

I did in fact read Jim’s blog on this way back, but I do not recall the history. I was, and am only defending Jim’s theology on the doctrine of sin. And not this certain very sad situation.

You however, have now even admitted to the positions of a-theist (as I read on Joel’s blog of recent). I must admit I am baffled why you are invloved on Judeo-Christian issues at all? And to my mind, any biblical criticism..historical or otherwise must always be but a handmaiden for the Truth and Revelation of God, both in Holy Scripture and the Church Catholic of God.
