July Giveaway 2 – New Living Translation (Study) Bible
I like giving away bibles, and will generally giveaway the recipient’s choice but would prefer the NLT. Mark Stevens, a recent ESV heretic, has been begging for an NLT Study Bible, I guess, because for some reason, I’ve become known among other bloggers as the NLT guy. I prefer person, but Mark is an ESV guy… Mark doesn’t want to admit this, but honestly Mark, the amount of emails I am getting is, well, unbelievable….
So, for the second giveaway this month, I will be giving away an NLT Study Bible. Same rules apply,
- 1 comment = 1 entry
- Enter as many times as you want
- I ship international
Unlike the ESV Study Bible, the study notes are not particular to a denomination or doctrine. Instead, the maps, drawings, and notes provides the reader and user a more secure foundation for the text which should, if the doctrines are true, allow for said doctrines to be seen.

I'd only want to win it so I could give it away. I love the NLT, but personally have a good one now.

rofl. Or the NAS for that matter. I can't stand how the “most literal” (ESV/NAS-which happens to be the latest translation I purchased) almost smack of anti-supernatural anti-spiritual gifts, cessationist, Calvinist, Dispensationalist heresy.
on July 13, 2010 at 5:22 pm
Permalink
Especially with Piper and Grudem touting how blasted good the ESV is, and bashing the TNIV (gasp, did I say it). reminds me of the fundies who espouse a KJVO philosophy. Makes me wish we could hire some Charismatic/Pentecostal hitmen (in PR, that is what they call evangelists, because they leave a mess for the pastor to clean up).
on July 13, 2010 at 5:24 pm
Permalink
P.S.: I have no problem using the NLT to balance out any Reform-crap from the ESV of NAS, and would appreciate a copy. By the way, Joel, the only version of Psalm 139 worth reading is that of the NLT. Love it, very powerful. And appreciate this contest.
on July 13, 2010 at 5:26 pm
Permalink
Unfortunately, I really need to come out with a translation that keeps the view of Spiritual gifts dead center where they belong (that is, that G-d can do whatever the hell or heaven he wishes to do, after all He is G-d). I get tired of so-called “believers” telling G-d what he can or cannot do and whom he can or cannot ordain.

This should make it 5 entries.

outside of Psalm 139, I know very little about the NLT. But if the Queen of gthe Biblioblogosphere is recommending it-er, Prime Minister,-then it means I probably should take note.

I picked up a Catholic Youth (study) Bible (NAB) at a thrift store because of its thorough cross-references and helpful footnotes.
Catholic sidelights adorn the pages, though: “The first verses of the Acts of the Apostles, Chapter 2, are a biblical story associated with the sacrament of Confirmation… During the Confirmation ceremony, the bishop or priest anoints with blessed oil, called chrism, the foreheads of those being confirmed and signs them with the gift of the holy Spirit. …”
Also, some of the many multi-cultural sidebars elevate non-Judeo-Christian sentiments uncritically (Iroquois Prayer of Thanksgiving begins, “We return thanks to our mother, the earth, which sustains us…”).
I would definitely like to win the New Living Translation (Study) Bible.
