Glenn Beck Defends the Indefensible – his ignorance

Category: Mormonism, Religion and PoliticsPolycarp @ 11:52 pm

You can read and listen to the entire thing here, but Glenn spouts idiotic conspiracy theories that only those who wear ten foil hats and wait for the rapture by aliens from Planet 3145a would believe. He says,

Where I go to church, there are members that preach social justice as members–my faith doesn’t–but the members preach social justice all the time. It is a perversion of the gospel. … You want to help out? You help out. It changes you. That’s what the gospel is all about: You.

What do Mormons think about Islam?

Category: Islam, Justin Martyr, MormonismPolycarp @ 1:49 pm

While I am sure the good folks at Defending. Contending. mean well, they ignore Christianity’s own history. They point to various statements by Mormons, past and present, in defense of Islam as ’sort of’ connected to the LDS. These statements seem to show that the LDS believe that Muslims and Mormons share a common spiritual brotherhood.

Mainstreaming Polygamy

Category: MormonismPolycarp @ 10:56 am

Of the past year, I have noticed that non-fundamentalist Mormons, and even non-Mormons, as starting to speak in near favor of polygamy (Husbands having more than one wife, not women having more than one husband, I mean, we have to have standards and all.) During a recent conversation on this blog – no I am not linking to it – the commentator suggested that polygamy is no longer allowed by the LDS because ‘our’ religion makes it against the Law. Further, suggests that polygamy is easily biblical, because we have patriarchal examples of it (I mean, sure, while Abraham is our example of Faith, would you really follow his moral example complete?)

I realize that this is not the view of many Mormons. I know several Mormons, and they are generally of a very respectable character, Glenn Beck notwithstanding. This is not a slight against them, nor a slight whatsoever, just an exploration of the mainstreaming of polygamy.

So, in the interesting of that commentator, I am posting a link to a story that hit the newswires earlier this week. This is a young family, a man who is married to one sister, officially, and one unofficially. They have children, friends, and seem to be generally pretty public about their lifestyle.

To me, while polygamy is entirely unbiblical, it is also something rather, well, selfish. You know what we call men with two wives or partners right? Lucky. Brave. Bold. A man’s man.

You know what we call a woman with multiple husbands or partners?

Mormon sisters share a husband

While sisters are known for their love of sharing, Mormon siblings Katie and Priscilla Churcher have chosen to share more than most in their choice of husband Travis.

Mormonism and the Gift of Tongues

Category: MormonismPolycarp @ 5:59 pm

I believe in tongues – but not to the extent that others might, say in the Pentecostal/Charismatic circles, but this article is interesting in the fact that it shows (1) Mormonism experimented with tongues, (2) tongues was prevalent in the early 19th century, and did not begin in 1916 and many believe, and (3) the practice of ‘teaching’ tongues has not changed.

Mormon Church investigates (posthumous) baptism of Obama's mother

Category: Mormonism, Religion and PoliticsPolycarp @ 1:27 pm

Ben Smith at the Politico Blog reports that the LDS are investigating the posthumous baptism of the President’s mother. For those that are unfamiliar with the practice, Mormons baptize the deceased, believing that it allows them to enter into the highest heaven:

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is investigating the posthumous “baptism” of President Barack Obama’s mother, Stanley Ann Dunham, as a “serious breach” of religious code, a spokeswoman said.

Church records published by a liberal blog, Americablog, show that Dunham, who died in 1995, was baptised last June 4 in Provo, Utah, and received endowment, another sacrament, a week later.

“The offering of baptism to our deceased ancestors is a sacred practice to us and it is counter to Church policy for a Church member to submit names for baptism for persons to whom they are not related,” said spokeswoman Kim Farah in an emailed statement. “The Church is looking into the circumstances of how this happened and does not yet have all the facts. However, this is a serious matter and we are treating it as such.”

Mormons believe that souls cannot enter heaven without undergoing baptism and other sacraments, and that those sacraments can be given by proxy after death. The practice of posthumous baptism by proxy has caused controversy in the past, as when Jewish groups raised objections to the baptism of victims of the Holocaust.

According to “doctrinal background” provided by an LDS spokesman, “well-meaning Church members sometimes bypass this instruction and submit the names of non-relatives for temple baptism. Others — perhaps pranksters or careless persons — have submitted the names of unrelated famous or infamous people, or even wholly fictitious names. These rare acts are contrary to Church policy and sometimes cause pain and embarrassment.”
