Are Women born to Suffer?

Category: Gender IssuesPolycarp @ 8:59 am

Recently I had two separate conversations with women who essentially stated the same thought: women are born to suffer.

Do you agree with that?

Naturally, these women are Oaxaqueñas, whose native state is in second place in the country of Mexico for violence against women.

Chihuahua state, where we previously ministered, takes first place due to the fact that thousands of women have been murdered in the past ten years there, with a quantitive number kidnapped and murdered on behalf of snuff p*rn*graphy, or so I’ve been told.

Secular Duties of Clergy

Category: Religious NewsPolycarp @ 11:59 pm

Over the past few years, we have seen the Roman Catholic Church suffer great condemnation because her priests have not only abused young men, and at times young women, but that others priests covered-it up. Molestation is a heinous crime, but the cover-up is infinitely more serious.

In the United States, in the individual states, laws have been enacted to order certain people – and in some states, all people – to report instances of abuse of any variety.

A few years ago, I was given information about severe abuse on two precious little girls. As a minister, then, I was bound by law to report what I knew. In no time, we were in court, on the witness stand, staring down months of threats and harassment, torment and near torture, but I told the truth and I did my duty. The harassment didn’t stop – Child Services were called on my family – but I was proud to do my duty then, because in the end, the little bit that I knew, was only the small tip of a very large iceberg.

That’s the way with child abuse, of any kind – it’s not just a slap here, but something more serious. It’s not just inappropriate touching of one child, but more often than not, it involves other children. What you see, believe it or not, is generally only a small portion of what is going on. That is why it is important for those required by law – which is supported by Scripture – to do their duty.

If I had not reported what I knew, I believe that I would have been just as guilt as those parents who abused those two precious little girls.

Tennessee for instance, requires

Any wound, injury, disability, or physical or mental condition which is of a nature as to reasonably indicate that it has been caused by brutality, abuse, or neglect; also includes sexual abuse (37-1-401, et seq.)

Be reported by,

Physician, chiropractor, hospital personnel, any other health or mental health professional, spiritual healing practitioner, school teacher/personnel, judge, social worker, day care center worker, foster care worker, law enforcement officer, neighbor, relative, friend, or any other person

Having knowledge or being called on to render aid to any child suffering from or sustaining a wound or injury which is of such a nature as to reasonably indicate or which on the basis of available information appears to indicate have been caused by brutality, abuse or neglect

And if you fail to report?

Class A misdemeanor – Possible Jail Sentence of 11 months and 29 days, with a maximum fine of $2,500

Most states have a mandatory reporting requirement for clergy; frankly, I believe that all states should be like Tennessee. In studying the laws in my home state, I found that child abuse laws actually grew from the laws afforded to animals.

As members of the ministry, you not only take upon yourselfs the solomn duty of God, but you must respect the laws of Caesar as well.

Does Rick Warren Support Domestic Violence?

Category: Rick WarrenPolycarp @ 9:56 am

According Rick’s brother-in-law, who is a teaching pastor at Saddleback, domestic violence is defined as a series of beatings. From here:

Kathryn Joyce has a typically insightful article at Double X, on attitudes to domestic violence at Rick Warren’s Saddleback Church. She quotes some audio clips of Teaching Pastor Tom Holladay (who is married to Warren’s sister), who explains that domestic abuse means regular beatings, not a one-off attack, and that a woman is never justified in seeking a divorce on grounds of violence:

“There’s something in me that wishes there was a Bible verse that says if they abuse you in this and such kind of way then you can leave them,” said Holladay, but sadly, he concluded, there wasn’t.

The author that the above post refers to the story of a woman who because she separated from her husband because of divorce, and filed a police report, she was frozen out by Saddleback – especially when her husband, a former Pentecostal minister, joined the ‘Baptist’ Saddleback.

Read the whole thing here; Kathryn deftly guides us through the wider context of marriage teaching and wifely submission within conservative evangelicalism.

I have to agree with Dr. West in saying that this goes beyond the pale and should be denounced. I denounce the teaching that says a woman must submit to beatings by her husband – it is Scriptural unsupported, Traditionally unsound, and simply out, of grave error. It treats women as second class citizens, bound to her husband regardless of abuse, perhaps even to the point of murder.

We know assuredly that the Lord did not condone spousal beatings, for we are commanded by the Apostle Paul, we as husbands, to treat our wives as the Lord treats the Church. She is His Bride and I cannot think that the Lord Himself would beat the Church.

Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord. For the husband is head of the wife, as also Christ is head of the church; and He is the Savior of the body. Therefore, just as the church is subject to Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in everything. Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself for her, that He might sanctify and cleanse her with the washing of water by the word, that He might present her to Himself a glorious church, not having spot or wrinkle or any such thing, but that she should be holy and without blemish. So husbands ought to love their own wives as their own bodies; he who loves his wife loves himself. For no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as the Lord does the church. For we are members of His body, of His flesh and of His bones. “For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.” This is a great mystery, but I speak concerning Christ and the church. Nevertheless let each one of you in particular so love his own wife as himself, and let the wife see that she respects her husband. (Ephesians 5:22-33 NKJV)

We debate so much the great things, the Godhead, the sacraments, the nature of the regeneration, but too often we leave the health of families waning, separating them in Sunday School, and at events, never seeking to draw them closer.

My grandfather told me once, of an event in the small town of Kentwood, Louisiana, at the opening of the last century, in which the town found out that a certain individual beat his wife, among other things. One night, the men of the community showed up at his doorstep and ‘discussed’ a few things with this man about his husbandly duties. After the ‘discussion’, the man never laid another finger on his wife, nor stepped out, no, as far as anyone could tell, said a cross word to her and his children. Now, these were baptists, of the Southern Variety.

A few things bring my blood to a boil – racism, sexism, and stupidity. It seems that Rick has scored two out of three. Why is he still allowed a respected voice?

Warren’s church says violence no excuse for divorce

Category: Rick WarrenPolycarp @ 3:04 pm

LAKE FOREST, Calif. (ABP) — Comments on the Saddleback Church website that the Bible does not permit a woman to divorce a physically abusive spouse have triggered concerns among advocates for victims of domestic violence.

The pastor of the Southern Baptist megachurch is Rick Warren, author of The Purpose Driven Life. Warren has been in the news of late as the surprise pick to deliver the invocation at President-elect Barack Obama’s Jan. 20 inauguration.

Women Drugged, Sexually Assaulted in 'Prayer Sessions'

Category: Bob Jones, Religious News, Todd BentleyPolycarp @ 6:42 pm

If anyone teaches otherwise and does not consent to wholesome words, even the words of our Lord Jesus Christ, and to the doctrine which accords with godliness, he is proud, knowing nothing, but is obsessed with disputes and arguments over words, from which come envy, strife, reviling, evil suspicions, useless wranglings of men of corrupt minds and destitute of the truth, who suppose that godliness is a means of gain. From such withdraw yourself. Now godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out. And having food and clothing, with these we shall be content. But those who desire to be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and harmful lusts which drown men in destruction and perdition. For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, for which some have strayed from the faith in their greediness, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows. (1st Timothy 6:3-10 NKJV)

There is a pattern that God said would happen. What has happened to Bob Jones, T.D. Jakes, Todd Bentley, Jimmy Swaggart and the numerous others that have fallen? What are their great sins? Paul was clear when he told Timothy that false doctrine will lead to harmful lusts. These people could speak to angels (Emma, anyone?), remove curses (the only curse is the curse of sin and that is removed by Christ), and banish evil spirits (Todd Bentley, anyone?)
