Mercy Ministries (HillSong) exorcism books leaked

Category: Religious NewsPolycarp @ 9:17 pm

First here, then here.

We have to remember that this is the same group which was unable to discern Michael Guglielmucci’s deception concerning his ‘cancer’. Now we see that they have a bit more explaining to do concerning their mental mistreatment of young women and others. This is what happens when you make the ‘worshiping’ the central part of the service, of that of the Worshiped. When you remove doctrine, there is no end to the amount of false teachings and practices that will arise.

Handbooks allegedly used to perform exorcisms on sick girls at the controversial Mercy Ministries residences in Sydney and on the Sunshine Coast have been leaked to LIVENEWS.com.au.

Mercy Ministries, which is bankrolled by the Pentecostal Hillsong Church, has previously denied performing exorcisms on residents.

The documents, obtained clandestinely by a girl who “escaped” the group’s clutches, shows counsellors how to rid ‘demons’ from girls struggling with anorexia, depression and drug addiction.

Mercy Ministries’ activities hit the headlines in March this year when former residents claimed they were subjected to exorcisms, were cut off from friends and family and had to sign over their Centrelink payments to the group.

Some of the young women say they had little or no access to the promised psychologists and other mental health professionals but were instead counselled by bible studies students whose solution to all problems was prayer.

Earlier this year the then head of Mercy Ministries, Peter Irvine, said exorcisms were not practised at the residences. Mercy Ministries has been forced to shut their Sunshine Coast residence.

“There’s no exorcism, no driving out of spirits it’s not how the program works,” he told Today Tonight’s Marguerite McKinnon earlier this year.

But the handbooks tell a different story and corroborate accounts given to LIVENEWS.com.au by former residents of Mercy Ministries.

In the handbook, under a section entitled ‘Identifying Additional Demons’ those practising the exorcism are advised to ask the demon’s name, but not for any more details.

“They sometimes talk: they may threaten the person or you. They have been know to say, ‘I am going to kill you,’ and other unsavoury phrases. Command them to be quiet in the Name of Jesus,” the book advises.

Later, the book, Restoring The Foundations, published by an American Christian group, warns those exorcising demons to be firm.

“The minister’s attitude is one of commanding,” it reads.

“He needs to be firm and prepared to press in. He does not need to be loud. (Demons are not deaf.) The ministers’ commanding attitude resembles that of a person speaking to a little “yappy” dog commanding him to go home and stop barking.

“We also want the ministry receiver to set his will to resist and then command the particular demon or grouping of demons to leave him, in Jesus’ name. This is repeated until the demons are gone.”

Later in the book, those performing the exorcism are given more complex techniques in a subheading called ‘What to do With Obstinate Demons’.

Later a list of ‘Scriptures that Demons Hate’ is provided.

“But if I with the finger of God cast out devils, no doubt the kingdom of God is come upon you,” is one such passage singled out.

The emergence of the exorcism handbook lends weight to other claims made by girls who went through the Mercy Ministries program.

Megan Smith (not her real name), who spoke to LIVENEWS.com.au earlier this year, said her panic attacks only got worse.

“I was self-harming,” she said.

“I was cutting my arm with anything I could get my hands on – scratching with anything from my nails to paper clips.

“I never really had a problem with self-harm beforehand. When you tell them about self-harming they said I was trying to get attention and I was taking their valuable time away from girls with real problems.”

Finally, she was subjected to an exorcism.

“The counsellor gave me a list of different demons – demon of anger, demon of unforgiveness, demon of pride, there were lots of them and I was told to go away and circle the demons I had in me or around me,” said Smith.

“I was really scared… they cast demons out of me, one by one, and they became quite excited and animated during the process, and spoke in tongues.

“It was the counsellors and myself and they put their hands on me and started praying one by one for each of the demons that were on the list to be cast out of me.

“After each demon was cast out I had to say ‘I confirm the demon of X has been cast out of me in the name of Jesus and is unwelcome to return.’

“The whole time I was there, all I heard was that I’m demonic.

“Even after the exorcism, when I had the next anxiety attack, I was told that they had already cast the demons out, so therefore I was obviously either faking it, or I had chosen to let the demons come back, in which case I was not serious about getting better.

“They kept telling us that the world can’t help us, professionals with all their ‘worldly qualifications’ can’t help us, only Mercy could because only they have God’s power.

“So when I was kicked out for being ‘demonic, unable to be helped, not worth a place at Mercy’ and because I had taken too long to pray to become a Christian… it left me worse than I had ever been before in my life.

“They told me I would never get better now because I had blown my chance. I started cutting my arms and wrists more than ever, with their voices echoing in my mind as I did it.”

Suicidal and self-harming after being removed from the program, which she now thought was her only hope, she went to see a “proper psychologist to prepare me to go back to Mercy to help me fit in better.”

“The psychologist had never heard of them but told me to stay away from them… that person helped me more in the 40 minute session – really listening to me and understanding me.”

My Weekend

Category: Other PostsPolycarp @ 9:39 am

Is it Monday already?

Sorry for the lack of posts this weekend, my friends, and the lack of discussion from your humble blogger, but I have been rather busy and when not busy, rather worn out.

See, last Tuesday, a friend of mine called and asked if we could bring a mutual friends’ belongings to him. A few months ago, I posted on this friend of ours and have updated the story since, but it is a tragic one. He since was able to get out of the hospital and move to his mothers in Falls Church, Va. His mother is a real piece of work. She allowed this young man to suffer numerous kinds of abuse as he grew up while positioning herself as the one shouldering the burden. I won’t get into the life that he was forced to lead or the life that he tried to get out of; however, when he was placed on SSI, his mother suddenly wanted him to live with her. Now that he is not getting any better, she is shipping him off to live with his grandmother in the Dominican Republic. Now, I am not sure about you, but the first place that I think of when I think of mental health care is the Dominican Republic.

His family that had begged him to come to Falls Church quickly abandoned him once he was there and literally stuck him in an attic which has played havoc on any hopes of recovery for this young man.

Anyway, he is readying himself to move to Florida before the transition to the Dominican Republic and had nothing. He was borrowing clothes and asking for donation just to have something to wear. He had no belongings. So his friend asked me to take the stuff out there this weekend. I agreed. This young man, a good friend in my time of need, needed something and who was I to deny that.

Our plan was to leave about 3 Saturday morning. I laid down about 11:30 Friday night and awoke to a call at 1:30 telling me that my driving partner was on his way. (Not an imposition. I told him to do so if he could not sleep). So, we left my house about 2:15 that morning with my 6 year old daughter in tow.

We made good time and arrived at his house at 8 that morning. We unload his stuff, a lot of stuff, and left. Our young friend was drugged up and unable to speak much. His mind was vacant. And his mother was telling us that she was ready for me to move so that she could get on with her life.

So we left about 8:30 that morning form his house and went to DC for just a small visit. It would be my second and my daughter’s first. Once there, we turned around and I arrived back home about 4. I then had to rush and get ready and then attend a dinner event and finally slipped into bed about midnight.

Abgael's first trip

Abgael

Work the next morning, went to the Sunday School picnic, left there about 2 come home and slept until 6 and then did my level best not to do anything until bedtime. So you see, dear reader, I am exhaustive, mentally, physically, and emotionally. And I am back at work for another long week.

Almost as bad as Baptists...

Almost as bad as Baptists...

But thank God that He was there each step of the way. I drove the entire time and was fine throughout. He encouraged me and kept my mind clear and given me peace and hope. I had a great time yesterday at the Picnic, even walked in the woods a bit.

Well, on to the real news….

I have found myself really coming to like these types of posts. It allows me to say more with less. After all, the best commentary to this world is actions that we see.

More on Todd Bentley’s Perverted Doctrine

Category: Todd BentleyPolycarp @ 8:53 am

First, we know that there is nothing new under the sun when it comes to the evil imaginations of man, whether in religion or in society. Evil has a way of lying dormant until someone foolish enough to be possessed by it gladly begins to proclaim it as something new and righteous. Second, we know that Christianity, as a historical tradition, has seen it’s share of heretics and diverging ideas, only to be lain to rest for a short season and picked up at some later date. The Gnostic has found rebirth in the Mormons while the Arius now witnesses about Jehovah. Therefore, it should not be surprising to see Montanus return in our present day.

Montanus was a 2nd century heretic that proclaimed a ‘new revelation’. From wikipedia

Scholars are divided as to when Montanus first began his prophecy, having chosen dates varying from c. AD 165 to as late as AD 177. Montanus travelled among the rural settlements of Asia Minor after his conversion, and preached and testified what he purported to be the Word of God; however, his teachings were regarded as heresy by the orthodox Church for a number of reasons. He claimed not only to have received a series of direct revelations from the Holy Ghost, but personally to be the incarnation of the paraclete mentioned in the Gospel of John 14:16. Montanus was accompanied by two women, Prisca, sometimes called Priscilla, and Maximilla, who likewise claimed to be the embodiments of the Holy Spirit that moved and inspired them. As they went, “the Three” as they were called, spoke in ecstatic visions and urged their followers to fast and pray, so that they might share these personal revelations. His preachings spread from his native Phrygia (where he proclaimed the village of Pepuza as the site of the New Jerusalem) across the contemporary Christian world, to Africa and Gaul.

It is generally agreed that the movement was inspired by Montanus’ reading of the Gospel of John— “I will send you the advocate [paraclete], the spirit of truth” (Heine 1987, 1989; Groh 1985). The response to this continuing revelation split the Christian communities, and the more orthodox clergy mostly fought to suppress it. Bishop Apollinarius found the church at Ancyra torn in two, and he opposed the “false prophesy” (quoted by Eusebius 5.16.5). But there was real doubt at Rome, and Pope Eleutherus even wrote letters in support of Montanism, although he later recalled them (Tertullian, “Adversus Praxean” c.1, Trevett 58-59).

Prisca claimed that Christ had appeared to her in female form. When she was excommunicated, she exclaimed “I am driven away like the wolf from the sheep. I am no wolf: I am word and spirit and power.”

The most widely known defender of Montanists was undoubtedly Tertullian, onetime champion of orthodox belief, who believed that the new prophecy was genuine and began to fall out of step with what he began to call “the church of a lot of bishops” (On Modesty).

The beliefs of Montanism contrasted with orthodox Christianity in the following ways:

  • The belief that the prophecies of the Montanists superseded and fulfilled the doctrines proclaimed by the Apostles.
  • The encouragement of ecstatic prophesying, contrasting with the more sober and disciplined approach to theology dominant in orthodox Christianity at the time and since.

  • The prophets of Montanism did not speak as messengers of God: “Thus saith the Lord,” but rather described themselves as possessed by God, and spoke in his person. “I am the Father, the Word, and the Paraclete,” said Montanus (Didymus, De Trinitate, III, xli); This possession by a spirit, which spoke while the prophet was incapable of resisting, is described by the spirit of Montanus: “Behold the man is like a lyre, and I dart like the plectrum. The man sleeps, and I am awake” (Epiphanius, “Panarion”, xlviii, 4).

From here we can get a glimpse of Todd’s Doctrine,

12. FURTHER REVELATION

We recognize that God is continually restoring truth and light to His Church. Therefore, we place no limit on further revelation; however, each must be substantiated according to the Scriptures.

Can Todd Bentley, and indeed the modern Charismatic movement, be described as the resurgence of Montanism? My opinion is yes, or course. Remarkable is the fact that throughout Fresh Fire’s doctrinal statement scriptures are given to support their belief, yet when we get to point twelve, we find not scriptural evidence to support a further revelation. (This is the case with other doctrines shared by other people as well, not just limited to Todd.) We also noticed that Todd mentions that God has to continually restore ‘truth and light’ to the Church.

(B)ut if I am delayed, I write so that you may know how you ought to conduct yourself in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth. (1st Timothy 3.15)

Accordingly, if the Church is the pillar and ground of the truth, then doesn’t that necessitate that the Church will eternally have the Truth with no need of restoration?

What about further revelation? Jude says,

Beloved, while I was very diligent to write to you concerning our common salvation, I found it necessary to write to you exhorting you to contend earnestly for the faith which was once for all delivered to the saints. (v3)

Paul says,

I marvel that you are turning away so soon from Him who called you in the grace of Christ, to a different gospel, which is not another; but there are some who trouble you and want to pervert the gospel of Christ. But even if we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel to you than what we have preached to you, let him be accursed. As we have said before, so now I say again, if anyone preaches any other gospel to you than what you have received, let him be accursed.
(Gal 1:6-9 NKJV)

We know why Todd cannot use verses to support his doctrine at this point, but we also see that there are verses that directly contradict his twelfth point. What does this say about Todd? We know that Todd constantly claims new and wonderful revelations and prophetic words. (Either through himself, or oddly enough, a woman – remember, Montanus has a triad, including himself and a woman, as well) The Apostles plainly say, even from their grave, that Todd Bentley has denied the faith, is apostate, and is accursed.

I was discussing these things with the Lord this morning, and it dawned on me that the name of the ministry was named Fresh Fire (never mind that proscription to whatever we do, we are to do in the name of Lord Jesus – Col 3.17). Wonder why? Is it because people are always seeking the new, the exciting, the fresh? What about the old fire that fell from heaven during the Feast of Weeks? Is that fire not good enough for today? Has doctrine and revelation changed so much that something, or someone, is constantly needed to ‘restore’ it? What about the steadfastness of the faith that was once for all delivered to the Saints?

Or is Todd just like the ancient heretic Montanus, in proclaiming a perverted gospel and seeking something new because the old doesn’t suit him?

For good doctrine, go here and here.

Todd Bentley – Devil Worshipper

Category: Todd BentleyPolycarp @ 10:41 am

Did Paul teach about the importance of angels? What the ministry of Christ focused on the supernatural?

Honestly? Something new? Didn’t the heretic Montanus seek the same thing? It seems old heresies never die, they just lie dormant. Todd Bentley, as too many know, is the ‘evangelist’ (although the news that he brings is not good whatsoever) who is holding the Lakeland ‘Revival’. His doctrine is simple – a perverted gosepl based on the supernatural (Sid Roth’s favorite subject)

Below is a video that is a small analysis on the Bentley Two-Step. So many people have been proclaiming that the world is to see a revival before the return of Christ, and yet Scripture tells us other wise, with Paul focusing in on the great apostasy that precedes the Tribulation. The prophecies that concern Todd Bentley are those that speak of false prophets and antichrist. The verses that teach against Todd are those which Paul wrote to the Galatians, and many others, warning against false teachers that pervert the gospel of Christ.

How can anyone trust this man when He cannot even trust his own experiences? This man is not leading people to God, but to Satan, into evil, into perversion. What should we say then? Do we hide the fact that this man has gone way beyond false doctrine, but is not leading people into direct worship of demons and experiencing demonic possession?

Anyone concerned with this issue needs to shout it from the rooftops that Todd Bentley is a devil is disguise.

Demonic Possession

Category: Debate/DiscussionPolycarp @ 3:37 pm

I have a friend, a very good friend. Yesterday, I had to go to the Judicial Annex and, along with two others, help swear out a mental hygiene warrant on him.

Here were the signs:

  • Ever growing thirst for the things that pertain to ‘God.’
  • The need to be baptized and to continue with the ‘brethren.’
  • Constant prayer
  • Removing those things out of this life that he considered evil
  • Attempting to leave the world system and fully devote himself to the kingdom of Heaven.
  • A need to love everyone and a fear for everyone’s soul

And I committed him?

Here are the rest of the signs:

  • Seeing that Obama was the one who would bring in the Antichrist.
  • Fully convinced that everyone in his life, except for me, was placed by some grand conspiracy to wrap him up in the Obama campaign.
  • He saw signs everywhere that Obama’s campaign was out to get him.
  • He believed that they were stealing his ideas
  • He progressed to believing that the government was out to get him for his ‘knowledge’.
  • As he progressed, and in rapid order, he soon became that he was the Son of God.
  • He wanted to be with his people, the people that he saw as ghosts in his vision of heaven
  • He begin to see people, objects, animals as demons
  • He was convinced that God was speaking to him directly, telling him every minute action.

For the past two months, he has increased in ‘religion’ and soon separated from his roommate to be with more ’spiritual people’, but the person that he moved in with, since she was associated with the Obama campaign, was evil and a part of the conspiracy. He called me this past Sunday morning, at 5am to tell me that he had a revelation that he was to leave politics behind because Obama was the antichrist.

His roommate filled me with the rest, saying that about 3am that morning my friend began screaming a fearful scream saying that he was being attacked by 3 demons and that he had to get rid of all Obama related items in his possession. So, some time before he called me, he offered a burnt offering  and said some prayers.

Not knowing what was going on, I invited him to attend Church with me on Sunday night. He seemed more than enthusiastic and desired baptism (which was not given) and accepted everything that everyone said. He needed a place to stay so I offered him to say with me and my family. Come to find out, he had not slept for three weeks, and eaten very little. On Monday, he went to get his stuff from various homes, but decided to forsake everything that he had because it was attached to evil. On Tuesday, he spent over an hour driving around in circles hoping to loose ‘them’. The mythical ‘they’ kept growing and not ‘they’ were following him, but he was going to lay down his life for my and my family. He wanted to protect us from ‘they’.

He had a revelation that he had to change his name, so he did, but you could still speak to the two. On Tuesday afternoon, I spoke with his former roommate who came to my house and we tried to do an intervention. He volunteered to go to the hospital, but would not stay. The social worker that interviewed him knew that he was not stable, but since he had professed not to be suicidal or homicidal then the State could not detain him. So, his roommate took him home.

During the 4 hours at the hospital, when he was alone, he would scream at the walls or the tv stating that they were out to get him. ‘They’ could hear him. ‘They’ would turn everyone of us. ‘They’ had somehow gotten to me and to his roommate. ‘They’ had also gotten to the hospital staff and his counselor.

On his way home, he stopped at Wendy’s but since the cashier greeted them (which alone is unusual) ’she’ was ‘they’. The Chinese food industry was a part of ‘they’ as well. Sometime later that night, he began to accuse the hospital of raping him. He told his roommate to drive him back into town so that he could be with ‘his people’. I was the phone listening and my friend’s rage broke, his sanity a long time in two, and in the most terrible weep and moan that I have heard, accused ‘them’ of raping him, and us (roommate and I) letting them do it. ‘They’ raped him and ‘took his blood, the blood of the son of God’.

We tried to get him to go to a men’s shelter, but he ended up at another of his friend’s house. He steadily got worse there, saying suicidal things, homicidal things. He would not come out of the house because the government was there.

His roommate, his friend, and myself swore out the mental health warrant against him, they had the hearing and they sent him for a 72 hour mental evaluation.

As he progressed, he became more and more hyper, more and more religious, more and more people.

It was the right thing to do, difficult, but still the right thing to do. I begin to wonder about those in the Bible that Christ came upon.

In Mark’s Gospel we read:

And they came over unto the other side of the sea, into the country of the Gadarenes. And when he was come out of the ship, immediately there met him out of the tombs a man with an unclean spirit, Who had his dwelling among the tombs; and no man could bind him, no, not with chains: Because that he had been often bound with fetters and chains, and the chains had been plucked asunder by him, and the fetters broken in pieces: neither could any man tame him. And always, night and day, he was in the mountains, and in the tombs, crying, and cutting himself with stones. But when he saw Jesus afar off, he ran and worshipped him, And cried with a loud voice, and said, What have I to do with thee, Jesus, thou Son of the most high God? I adjure thee by God, that thou torment me not. For he said unto him, Come out of the man, thou unclean spirit. And he asked him, What is thy name? And he answered, saying, My name is Legion: for we are many. And he besought him much that he would not send them away out of the country. Now there was there nigh unto the mountains a great herd of swine feeding. And all the devils besought him, saying, Send us into the swine, that we may enter into them. And forthwith Jesus gave them leave. And the unclean spirits went out, and entered into the swine: and the herd ran violently down a steep place into the sea, (they were about two thousand;) and were choked in the sea.

Barclay, in his Daily Bible Study series comments:

We shall not even begin to understand this story unless we see how serious a case of demon-possession this man was. It is clear that Jesus made more than one attempt to heal him. Mk 5:8 tells us that Jesus had begun by using his usual method–an authoritative order to the demon to come out. On this occasion that was not successful. Next, he demanded what the demon’s name was. It was always supposed in those days that, if a demon’s name could be discovered, it gave a certain power over it. An ancient magical formula says, “I adjure thee, every demonic spirit, Say whatsoever thou art.” The belief was that if the name was known the demon’s power was broken. In this case even that did not prove enough.

Jesus saw that there was only one way to cure this man–and that was to give him unanswerable demonstration that the demons had gone out of him, at least, unanswerable as far as his own mind was concerned. It does not matter whether we believe in demon-possession or not; the man believed in it. Even if it all lay in his disordered mind, the demons were terribly, real to him. Dr. Rendle Short, speaking about the supposed evil influence of the moon (Ps 121:6)  which emerges in the words lunatic and moonstruck, says, “Modern science does not recognize any particular harm as coming from the moon. Yet it is a very widespread belief that the moon does affect people mentally. It is good to know that the Lord can deliver us from imaginary dangers as well as from real ones. Often the imaginary are harder to face.”

Dr. Thomson (“The Land and the Book,” vol. i. p. 213) says respecting this case:

“There are some very similar at the present day – furious and dangerous maniacs, who wander about the mountains, and sleep in tombs and caves. In their worst paroxysms they are quite unmanageable and prodigiously strong.”

In Mark 1:23, Christ ran into another possessed man. We return to Barclay again, who says:

Dr. A. Rendle Short cites a fact which shows the intensity with which the ancient world believed in demons. In many ancient cemeteries skulls were found which had been trepanned. That is to say, a hole had been bored in the skull. In one cemetery, out of one hundred and twenty skulls, six had been trepanned. With the limited surgical technique available that was no small operation. Further, it was clear from the bone growth that the trepanning had been done during life. It was also clear that the hole in the skull was too small to be of any physical or surgical value; and it is known that the removed disc of bone was often worn as an amulet round the neck. The reason for the trepanning was to allow the demon to escape from the body of the man. If primitive surgeons were prepared to undertake that operation, and if men were prepared to undergo it, the belief in demon-possession must have been intensely real.

Where did these demons come from? There were three answers to that question. (i) Some believed that they were as old as creation itself. (ii) Some believed that they were the spirits of wicked men who had died and were still carrying on their malignant work. (iii) Most people connected the demons with the old story in Gen 6:1-8 (compare 2Pet 2:4-5).

….

It does not matter whether or not we believe in all this; whether it is true or not is beside the point. The point is that the people in New Testament times did. We still may use the phrase Poor devil! That is a relic of the old belief. When a man believed himself to be possessed he was “conscious of himself and also of another being who constrains and controls him from within.” That explains why the demon-possessed in Palestine so often cried out when they met Jesus. They knew that Jesus was believed by some at least to be the Messiah; they knew that the reign of the Messiah was the end of the demons; and the man who believed himself to be possessed spoke as a demon when he came into the presence of Jesus

The young man that I knew was one who was intelligent, gifted, articulate and somewhat adjusted. To see him delve into this mindset is something that is a little shaking. I am not sure if I follow the traditional mindset of fundamentalism or something akin to Barclay’s understanding of demonic possession. I do know that what I saw my friend go through began to open my eyes to the reality of mental illness. Is he bi-polar? Is he suffering from paranoid schizophrenia? Or is it a simply case of demonic possession?

I don’t know, but I know that my God is still in the business of casting out demons or ‘demons’. I know that He is bigger than ‘they’. I also know that it has hurt me and the rest of his friends a bit, but I will continue to pray for him.

A doctor said that if he is able to come out, then he could very well not remember any of this. I pray that as well.
