Friday's Question of the Day: Is the Devil Real?

Category: Debate/DiscussionPolycarp @ 7:59 am

Is the Devil real? Is he a medieval  creation?

Is the adversary more of an it, a creation of humanity, found in humanity, but personified?

More on the Codex Gigas – The National Geographic has lost it's mind

Category: Religious NewsPolycarp @ 9:16 pm

First, from last year, here. I didn’t catch it when it first aired, but I am watching it now. The National Geographic has really gone far and wide to lose credibility here. Here is the first part:

Like Dr. West, it’s ‘goofy rubbish.’ My eyes have rolled so much since the show started that my head hurts. Really? The devil made a deal with the monk to create a bible with ‘all of human knowledge’ in one night to make sure the monk didn’t get kicked out?

Does Satan Exist – The Nightline Debate

Category: Debate/Discussion, Religious NewsPolycarp @ 10:26 am

Philosopher Deepak Chopra and Bishop Carlton Pearson faces-off against Pastor Mark Driscoll of the Mars Hill Church and Annie Lobert, founder of the Christian ministry “Hookers for Jesus” about the existence of the Devil.

I was impressed with Mark Driscoll’s presentation on this program. I do not agree with everything that he said, but his stance is at least rooted in the bible.

I can understand why Carlton Pearson is on this program, but why is Deepak? Does he really have much of a say in whether or not Satan exists? He doesn’t believe in God, and chides those that do believe. A belief, he says, is a cover-up for insecurity. He calls those that believe, primitive.

If you go to 8.50, you will here Carlton dismiss Annie as ‘young in the Lord, and she was a prostitute’ which I guess means taht she has no perspective on the adversary.

Amy Letinsky, a member of Mar’s Hill Church, kept up with the debate on her blog here.

For the complete debate, go to Nightline, here.

Do I believe in the adversary? Frankly, I could care less as we are told to resist the devil and he will flee from us. I do have to say that I might be in agreement with the other side, when I say this: Too many times, people blame the devil for everything when we, the individual and society, should shoulder this blame for ourselves.

Too many times, we throw out ‘the devil made me do it’ when in fact, it was our flesh that caused us to do those things which we should not, those things in which we miss the mark of God’s holiness. Paul’s war was not against the adversary, leaving that up to Christ, but against the flesh.

I’m not saying that the adversary is getting a bad rap, but really, we must have responsibility for our own actions.

Going all out this year – NGC to air 'The Devil's Bible' (Codex Gigas)

Category: Religious NewsPolycarp @ 8:18 am

According to Wiki

The Codex includes the entire Latin Vulgate version of the Bible, except for the books of Acts and Revelation, which are from a pre-Vulgate version. Also included are Isidore of Seville’s encyclopedia Etymologiae, JosephusAntiquities of the Jews, Cosmas of Prague’s Chronicle of Bohemia, various tractates (from history, etymology and physiology), a calendar with necrologium, a list of brothers in Podlažice monastery, magic formulae and other local records. The entire document is written in Latin.

The manuscript includes illuminations in red, blue, yellow, green and gold. Capital letters are elaborately illuminated, frequently across the entire page. The codex has a unified look as the nature of the writing is unchanged throughout, showing no signs of age, disease or mood on the part of the scribe. This may have led to the belief that the whole book was written in a very short time (see Legend).

Page 290, otherwise empty, includes a unique picture of the devil, about 50cm tall. Several pages before this are written on a blackening vellum and have a very gloomy character, somewhat different from the rest of the codex.

And supposedly,

According to legend the scribe was a monk who breached his monastic code and was sentenced to be walled up alive. In order to forbear this harsh penalty he promised to create in one single night a book to glorify the monastery forever, including all human knowledge. Near midnight he became sure that he could not complete this task alone, so he sold his soul to the devil for help. The devil completed the manuscript and the monk added the devil’s picture out of gratitude for his aid.

The Facts, as they say:

  • The Devil’s Bible is so huge that it requires at least two people to carry it.
  • Once considered the eighth wonder of the world, the Codex Gigas stretches three feet long and weighs a hundred and sixty-five pounds.
  • It is the only book that places the Old and New Testaments alongside violent, holy incantations.
  • The Codex Gigas contains one full page – right opposite the devil portrait – of a towering Heavenly City. Although no people can be seen in the Heavenly City, it is a symbol of hope and salvation, a contrast to the portrait of the devil on the opposing page.
  • The Codex Gigas includes mystical medical formulas for anything from treating ailments such as fevers and epilepsy to resolving practical problems such as finding a thief.
  • The book’s transfer to Prague in 2008 took a year of planning. It was insured for $15.1 million during the transfer.
  • The Devil’s Bible has 600 pages, which is 310 parchment leaves, all made from donkey skins.

From the Bible that is rarely read: Sirach 15.11-20

Category: Devotional, RSV, SirachPolycarp @ 3:04 pm

Do not say, “Because of the Lord I left the right way”; for he will not do what he hates. Do not say, “It was he who led me astray”; for he had no need of a sinful man. The Lord hates all abominations, and they are not loved by those who fear him. It was he who created man in the beginning, and he left him in the power of his own inclination. If you will, you can keep the commandments, and to act faithfully is a matter of your own choice. He has placed before you fire and water: stretch out your hand for whichever you wish. Before a man are life and death, and whichever he chooses will be given to him. For great is the wisdom of the Lord; he is mighty in power and sees everything; his eyes are on those who fear him, and he knows every deed of man. He has not commanded any one to be ungodly, and he has not given any one permission to sin. (Sirach 15:11-20 from the Revised Standard Version RSV)

I remember being in grade school, 2nd grade I believe, and quickly running a foul of a classmate. He was a PK – preacher’s kid and new to the school. I remember sitting in the cafeteria before school began and having a conversation about the devil – yes, I know, but hey, I didn’t have the blog then! – and he said that it was the devil who makes him do ‘bad things’. It is the same excuse that many people use today – speeding, cursing, violence – ‘the devil made me do it.’ Obviously, this was a problem a few centuries before Christ as well. Sirach confronts it with a very abrupt statement – Don’t blame anyone but yourself. We have free will as a creation of God – we can employ it for good or evil.

Recently, I have been asked about the idea of apostasy. Apostasy involves the idea of falling away from God. It is right to be reminded that nothing can remove us, but we sure can jump ship! The very idea that people would blame God for their sin, transgression, or apostasy appalls Sirach. I have actually met people that blame either the Church or perhaps the Pastor (or the easiest thing to do, is to blame the pastor’s wife) or perhaps a member. The real fault lies in the person themselves. They have chosen to ‘leave the right way’, to ‘fall away’ as the King James Version puts it.

The Greek here is a paraphrase of the Hebrew (yes, contrary to the KJVO myth Sirach was written in Hebrew originally) which reads ‘Say not, From God is my transgression, for that which he hates he made not.’ This leads us to a slightly different understanding of the verse, but both implying that God does not make sin and would not lead people into it. James clearly echoes Sirach here, when he says,

Let no one say when he is tempted, “I am tempted by God”; for God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does He Himself tempt anyone.  (James 1:13 NKJV)

It is interested to note the Hebrew addition to verse 13(b). The Greek says, ‘The Lord hates all abominations, and they are not loved by those who fear him’ to which the Hebrew adds ‘and he will not let it come hear those that fear him.’ Again, Paul agrees here when he says,

For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord. (Romans 8:38-39 NKJV)

Sirach here sees the orthodox idea of sin – that it is by our own inclination, will, and choice. We must choose to live sinless lives. Sirach says that before us is fire (the curse) and water (the blessing) and it is up to each and everyone of us to choose between the two, but if we choose the fire, then it is not because of God that we do this, the blame falling on our own shoulders.

Angels, Deception and a Cry for Biblical Truth

Friends, here is an article from J. Lee Grady. I believe that he helps to answer some questions. I might do a further post myself on angels, especially angels in the Church.

Angels, Deception and a Cry for Biblical Truth

Weird teachings about angels have become the norm in some charismatic circles today. It’s time to demand sanity on the subject.

Weird teachings about angels have become the norm in some charismatic circles today. It’s time to demand sanity on the subject.

At a growing Brazilian church in Boston, a pastor told his congregation he was having regular conversations with an angel. Weeks later he set a chair on the stage for the heavenly visitor, whom he said was attending Sunday services even though no one could see him. The pastor eventually wrote a book containing messages he had supposedly received from the angel. The man’s teachings became so bizarre that he was eventually removed from his denomination for promoting heresy.

Flight Attendant called Joel Osteen the 'devil'.

Category: Joel Osteen, Religious NewsPolycarp @ 12:05 pm

Ha! Okay, this is getting a bit funny and a bit sad. Granted, Joel might have the doctrine of devils, but honestly, calling him the ‘devil’. Where is the pitch fork? The tail? The horns? And why is ‘cult’ thrown out so liberally?

I have found myself really coming to like these types of posts. It allows me to say more with less. After all, the best commentary to this world is actions that we see.

More on Todd Bentley’s Perverted Doctrine

Category: Todd BentleyPolycarp @ 8:53 am

First, we know that there is nothing new under the sun when it comes to the evil imaginations of man, whether in religion or in society. Evil has a way of lying dormant until someone foolish enough to be possessed by it gladly begins to proclaim it as something new and righteous. Second, we know that Christianity, as a historical tradition, has seen it’s share of heretics and diverging ideas, only to be lain to rest for a short season and picked up at some later date. The Gnostic has found rebirth in the Mormons while the Arius now witnesses about Jehovah. Therefore, it should not be surprising to see Montanus return in our present day.

Montanus was a 2nd century heretic that proclaimed a ‘new revelation’. From wikipedia

Scholars are divided as to when Montanus first began his prophecy, having chosen dates varying from c. AD 165 to as late as AD 177. Montanus travelled among the rural settlements of Asia Minor after his conversion, and preached and testified what he purported to be the Word of God; however, his teachings were regarded as heresy by the orthodox Church for a number of reasons. He claimed not only to have received a series of direct revelations from the Holy Ghost, but personally to be the incarnation of the paraclete mentioned in the Gospel of John 14:16. Montanus was accompanied by two women, Prisca, sometimes called Priscilla, and Maximilla, who likewise claimed to be the embodiments of the Holy Spirit that moved and inspired them. As they went, “the Three” as they were called, spoke in ecstatic visions and urged their followers to fast and pray, so that they might share these personal revelations. His preachings spread from his native Phrygia (where he proclaimed the village of Pepuza as the site of the New Jerusalem) across the contemporary Christian world, to Africa and Gaul.

It is generally agreed that the movement was inspired by Montanus’ reading of the Gospel of John— “I will send you the advocate [paraclete], the spirit of truth” (Heine 1987, 1989; Groh 1985). The response to this continuing revelation split the Christian communities, and the more orthodox clergy mostly fought to suppress it. Bishop Apollinarius found the church at Ancyra torn in two, and he opposed the “false prophesy” (quoted by Eusebius 5.16.5). But there was real doubt at Rome, and Pope Eleutherus even wrote letters in support of Montanism, although he later recalled them (Tertullian, “Adversus Praxean” c.1, Trevett 58-59).

Prisca claimed that Christ had appeared to her in female form. When she was excommunicated, she exclaimed “I am driven away like the wolf from the sheep. I am no wolf: I am word and spirit and power.”

The most widely known defender of Montanists was undoubtedly Tertullian, onetime champion of orthodox belief, who believed that the new prophecy was genuine and began to fall out of step with what he began to call “the church of a lot of bishops” (On Modesty).

The beliefs of Montanism contrasted with orthodox Christianity in the following ways:

  • The belief that the prophecies of the Montanists superseded and fulfilled the doctrines proclaimed by the Apostles.
  • The encouragement of ecstatic prophesying, contrasting with the more sober and disciplined approach to theology dominant in orthodox Christianity at the time and since.

  • The prophets of Montanism did not speak as messengers of God: “Thus saith the Lord,” but rather described themselves as possessed by God, and spoke in his person. “I am the Father, the Word, and the Paraclete,” said Montanus (Didymus, De Trinitate, III, xli); This possession by a spirit, which spoke while the prophet was incapable of resisting, is described by the spirit of Montanus: “Behold the man is like a lyre, and I dart like the plectrum. The man sleeps, and I am awake” (Epiphanius, “Panarion”, xlviii, 4).

From here we can get a glimpse of Todd’s Doctrine,

12. FURTHER REVELATION

We recognize that God is continually restoring truth and light to His Church. Therefore, we place no limit on further revelation; however, each must be substantiated according to the Scriptures.

Can Todd Bentley, and indeed the modern Charismatic movement, be described as the resurgence of Montanism? My opinion is yes, or course. Remarkable is the fact that throughout Fresh Fire’s doctrinal statement scriptures are given to support their belief, yet when we get to point twelve, we find not scriptural evidence to support a further revelation. (This is the case with other doctrines shared by other people as well, not just limited to Todd.) We also noticed that Todd mentions that God has to continually restore ‘truth and light’ to the Church.

(B)ut if I am delayed, I write so that you may know how you ought to conduct yourself in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth. (1st Timothy 3.15)

Accordingly, if the Church is the pillar and ground of the truth, then doesn’t that necessitate that the Church will eternally have the Truth with no need of restoration?

What about further revelation? Jude says,

Beloved, while I was very diligent to write to you concerning our common salvation, I found it necessary to write to you exhorting you to contend earnestly for the faith which was once for all delivered to the saints. (v3)

Paul says,

I marvel that you are turning away so soon from Him who called you in the grace of Christ, to a different gospel, which is not another; but there are some who trouble you and want to pervert the gospel of Christ. But even if we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel to you than what we have preached to you, let him be accursed. As we have said before, so now I say again, if anyone preaches any other gospel to you than what you have received, let him be accursed.
(Gal 1:6-9 NKJV)

We know why Todd cannot use verses to support his doctrine at this point, but we also see that there are verses that directly contradict his twelfth point. What does this say about Todd? We know that Todd constantly claims new and wonderful revelations and prophetic words. (Either through himself, or oddly enough, a woman – remember, Montanus has a triad, including himself and a woman, as well) The Apostles plainly say, even from their grave, that Todd Bentley has denied the faith, is apostate, and is accursed.

I was discussing these things with the Lord this morning, and it dawned on me that the name of the ministry was named Fresh Fire (never mind that proscription to whatever we do, we are to do in the name of Lord Jesus – Col 3.17). Wonder why? Is it because people are always seeking the new, the exciting, the fresh? What about the old fire that fell from heaven during the Feast of Weeks? Is that fire not good enough for today? Has doctrine and revelation changed so much that something, or someone, is constantly needed to ‘restore’ it? What about the steadfastness of the faith that was once for all delivered to the Saints?

Or is Todd just like the ancient heretic Montanus, in proclaiming a perverted gospel and seeking something new because the old doesn’t suit him?

For good doctrine, go here and here.
