L.A. Episcopal Diocese elects openly lesbian bishop

Category: Religious NewsPolycarp @ 12:33 am

Los Angeles’ Episcopal Diocese elected an openly lesbian priest as assistant bishop on Saturday, a move likely to stoke more tensions in the global Anglican community over the divisive issue of gay clergy.

The Rev. Canon Mary Glasspool, 55, of Baltimore is the first openly gay priest chosen as an Episcopal bishop since Gene Robinson of New Hampshire, whose 2003 consecration deeply strained church unity. Her election must be approved by the national church.

Conservative Episcopalians Prepare for their Exodus

Category: Religious NewsPolycarp @ 9:51 pm

The people of St. Luke’s Anglican Church have called their La Crescenta parish home for 85 years. Generations of families have grown up within its historic stone walls.

On Sunday, the Rev. Rob Holman will deliver his final sermon there, an epitaph to a bruising legal fight the congregation waged and lost to practice its conservative brand of Christian theology and hold on to the church.

On Monday, St. Luke’s leaders will hand over its keys to the Episcopal Diocese of Los Angeles.

……”I cannot compromise my faith,” said senior warden Debbie Kollgaard, who heads the church’s vestry. “I think I can speak for a lot of people at the church: What I have is more important than any property.”

Is America a Christian Nation? Or, how would it look if it was?

Category: Religion and Politics, TheologyPolycarp @ 9:07 pm

Passing thoughts….

Josh has pointed us to a post by Cynthia Boaz at the Huffington Post. I think anyone who has read my blog long enough knows two things about me in this regard:

  1. I do not like to confuse Church and State (see my recent posts in this category, link below)
  2. I do not believe that this country, or any geo-political unit, is a Christian nation.

Why is it Okay for Liberals to use Religion for their Agenda?

Category: Joel Osteen, Religion and Politics, Rick Warren, TheologyPolycarp @ 11:59 pm

I watch Ed Schultz when nothing else is on, and I cannot find the remote, and I cannot sleep – that’s not exactly fair, I mean, I like Ed, but I am so sick and tired of politics lately. Plus, I have more than my fair share of books to read. But I did catch him last week, at least a little bit. He has asking where the religion community was on health care.

Church of England General Synod to debate communion with ACNA

Category: Religious NewsPolycarp @ 7:59 am

As the TEC in Canada and the Unites States continues a steadily descent into liberalism, while maintianing that it is historically Christian, the Anglican Communion will have to face some serious descisions in the coming months. Personally, I see that the entire Anglican Communion will soon face balkanization heading into directly into liberalism, into Rome, and into Orthodoxy.

The General Synod of the Church of England is to be asked to decide whether it wants to be in communion with the newly founded Anglican Church of North America.

A Private Members Motion (PMM) was tabled at the York General Synod last Friday by lay member Lorna Ashworth calling for recognition of ACNA, which unites into a single church some 100,000 Anglicans in 700 parishes that have severed ties with The Episcopal Church and the Anglican Church of Canada over their liberal shift.

The PMM invites Synod to “express the desire that the Church of England be in communion with the Anglican Church in North America”.

It has received 126 members’ signatures at the York General Synod, meaning that the Synod’s business committee will have to set a date for the debate when it meets in September.

The Bishops of Winchester, Ely, Europe, Rochester and Blackburn have all expressed public support for the PMM, as well as the Suffragan Bishops of Willesden, Beverley and Burnley.

Episcopalians ‘effectively end’ gay bishop ban

Category: Religious NewsPolycarp @ 3:56 pm

The Episcopal Church moved Monday toward affirming their acceptance of gays and lesbians for all roles in the ministry, despite pressure from fellow Anglicans worldwide for a decisive moratorium on consecrating another openly gay bishop.

Bishops at the Episcopal General Convention in Anaheim, California, voted 99-45 with two abstentions for a statement declaring “God has called and may call” to ministry gays in committed lifelong relationships.

Lay and priest delegates to the meeting had comfortably approved a nearly identical statement, and were expected to adopt the latest version before the meeting ends Friday.

(snip)

However, the Episcopal gay advocacy group Integrity, said in a statement Monday night that the declaration “effectively ends” the temporary prohibition on gays in ministry. Integrity called the vote “another step in the Episcopal Church’s ‘coming out’ process.”Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori, who leads the Episcopal Church, was among the bishops who voted to approve the declaration. The statement also affirms the Episcopal Church’s commitment to participate in and help fund the Anglican Communion, the third-largest grouping of churches worldwide, behind the Roman Catholic Church and Orthodox Christian churches.

Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams, the Anglican spiritual leader, had attended the Episcopal national meeting in Anaheim in its opening days last week. He said, “I hope and pray that there won’t be decisions in the coming days that could push us further apart.”

Rick Warren to Address Breakaway Anglicans

Category: Rick WarrenPolycarp @ 1:51 pm

Pastor Rick Warren, among several other Christian leaders, has agreed to address thousands of breakaway Anglicans in June when they meet for their first official assembly as the Anglican Church in North America.

In an announcement Tuesday, the ACNA – seen as a rival body to The Episcopal Church and the Anglican Church in Canada – revealed a list of speakers who have so far confirmed their participation in the emerging province’s assembly in Bedford, Texas.

Warren is being joined by Metropolitan Jonah, an archbishop in the Orthodox Church in America, and the Rev. Dr. Todd Hunter of Anglican Mission in the Americas – a breakaway group.
