Big Time Scientologist Leaves, Posts 95 Thesis on the Way Out

Category: False ProphetsPolycarp @ 12:54 am

Well, maybe not 95 of them, but another Hollywood actor has left the cult – here, I’ll use the word pretty strongly, leaving this very public letter. So, what do you do when you resign from the Scientologist cult? He only focuses on two issues, really, the support by a local group of Prop 8 and the use of disconnection, in which members are forced to disconnected from family and friends who might stand against Scientology. If you care to click the tag at the bottom, there are a whole host of others issues which surround Scientology. Maybe, regardless of the reason for defection, some of these issues will be confirmed.

How to Explain the Religions of Abraham to the Hollywood Generation

Category: Islam, TechnologyPolycarp @ 12:28 pm

If you don’t like humor, don’t click below – and if you are reading it on the RSS feature, don’t go any further.

Admittedly, we live in a world where people worry more about Star Trek Canon (and something called star Wars or something like that) than they do about the natures of things eternal – so, while I do not pretend to like contemporize Christianity, I found this slightly humorous.

Brad Pitt on God and Pot

Category: Atheism, Religious NewsPolycarp @ 11:55 am

At the blog, Proud Atheists, they mentioned the dynamic conversation held by Bill and Brad. Brad, I believe is an actor. Mr Jolie? I dunno – something like that. The conversation dipped into the realm of theology (because we all know that Hollywood is a trend setter on just about everything….)

Dominionist Patricia King wants to make movies

Category: Joel's Army, Patricia King, RevelationPolycarp @ 7:59 pm

I’ve tried to stay away from the Elijah List’s comedy hour/house of horrors, but everyone once in a while, I get an email that makes me laugh/gets my dander up. Such as this one. As part of the Seven Mountain Mandate these dominionists say that they must take over different areas of culture (Business, Media, Education, Entertainment, Government, Family, Religion). One of these ‘mountains’ is the entertainment industry. Seriously. Before Christ can come back, the Church has to make movies.

'American Idol' goes to church

Category: Religious NewsPolycarp @ 7:59 pm

From here:

Music became an avenue for ministry when Summer Grove Baptist Church hosted one of Shreveport’s biggest events of the year -– “American Idol” auditions in late June.

American Idol approached Summer Grove six weeks earlier seeking permission to use the church’s facilities. Because Summer Grove’s campus once was South Park Mall, American Idol personnel knew space would not be a problem.

Pastor Rod Masteller said the church prayed about and carefully discussed the request before reaching a decision, embracing it as an opportunity to show Christ’s love.

“Some people think church is off to the side, its own little community. We want to draw them in,” Masteller said. “We want everyone in this community and the country to know the church is not snobbish. We don’t want to change our beliefs or morals, but we want them to know our doors are open.”

You know, with that excuse, I wonder if they will allow the local strip club to hold auditions? My view is this – if it is dedicated to God, as a sanctuary should be, then use it for godly things.

All Christians are Serial Killers

Category: Debate/DiscussionPolycarp @ 8:59 am

Someone sent me this. The author makes the point that if  people judge Christianity by the portrayal in Hollywood – oh yes, they do, don’t they?

But why is that? We’ve never seen Hollywood go after Buddhism, Hinduism, or even Islam. I’d be inclined to believe that it’s due to the first two revolving around more subjective moralities (which is cool with the 310) and the latter… well, they blow crap up. Sure Muslims are the cause of virtually all terrorism in the world today, yet the good old folks of Tinseltown go out of their way to portray them as “good people, given a bad name by extremists” (see “Babel,” “Kingdom of Heaven”). On the other hand, we’ve got Conservative Christians who are statistically far and away the most generous people on the planet (whether you’re judging by missionary work or basic tax returns) consistently being portrayed as hateful villains often using scripture to justify horrifying acts (see nearly every spiritual horror/psycho thriller movie made in the last three decades). Disregard the fact that people like my middle-class father annually give more to charity than President Obama and Joe Biden combined, because folks like Sean Penn have already boxed him in as a greedy, judgmental jackass. If people in the Sean Penn clan feel that way, then it’s got to be true!

New Hypatia Movie, Agora

Category: Fourth Century, Religious NewsPolycarp @ 11:59 pm

Roger Pearse tell us of a movie to be about Hypatia:

Rachel Weisz and Max Minghella will star in ancient Egyptian epic “Agora,” the next film by Alejandro Amenabar and the first production from Fernando Bovaira’s new Madrid-based banner Mod Prods. . . .

“Agora,” Amenabar’s second English-language film after Nicole Kidman starrer “The Others,” is set in Roman Egypt in the fourth century A.D. Weisz plays astrologer-philosopher Hypatia of Alexandria, who fights to save the collected wisdom of the ancient world. Her slave Davus (Minghella) is torn between his love for his mistress and the possibility of gaining his freedom by joining the rising tide of Christianity. . . .

Or, as the Hollywood Reporter puts it:

Set in Roman Egypt in the fourth century, “Agora” tells the story of the legendary astronomer Hypatia (Weisz), trapped in the legendary Library of Alexandria, and her fight to save the old world’s wisdom from the religious riots sweeping the streets of Alexandria. Her slave Davus (Minghella) wrestles with his yearning for freedom and his professed love for his mistress.

Do we really want Hollywood making 'Christian' movies?

Category: Religious NewsPolycarp @ 3:05 pm

MSNBC is running a story on the new Angels and Demons movie by Dan Brown (He wrote that little book about Da Vinci). Well, I guess all this good will that they are given the Christian Faith is doing some good -

It’s one thing for some nerdy fanboy who lives in his parents’ basement to show his enthusiasm for “The Dark Knight” by dressing up as the Joker. But for a pastor to stand before his congregation in full Joker regalia, complete with ratty wig and gruesome makeup, and deliver a sermon on good and evil — that’s something else altogether.

Last summer, in a radical attempt to engage his young congregants at the Christ Chapel Mountaintop Church in Manassas, Va., pastor Rob Seagears did exactly that. Each Sunday, Seagears dressed up as a character from that weekend’s top-grossing film and used the movie — no matter how vulgar, violent, or ungodly it seemed — as the basis for a discussion of Christian morality. One Sunday, he was Indiana Jones. Another, he rode up to the pulpit on a motorcycle in a Batman costume. The weekend “Tropic Thunder” opened, he showed up wearing camouflage and wielding a machete.

The idea, for Seagears, was not to rail against the corrupting virus of Hollywood, as church leaders have in the past, but to transmute that virus into a spiritual vaccine to inoculate his flock. “Pop culture is the language they speak,” he says. “This was about meeting them where they are and trying to build a bridge back to God.”

Really? Can you imagine the Gospel in pop culture? Do you really want Hellywood to build the ‘bridge back to God?’ If the Faith needs movies, which is fine, then maybe they should stay away from Not the Wordywood. (Just not as good as some people are with making puns – Pluralistic Fish and all).

Wolverine, Hannah Montana and Britney Spears Issue Pro-Homosexual Message

Category: Homosexuality, Religious NewsPolycarp @ 3:51 pm

You all know how I feel about this – but I loved the headline.

WASHINGTON, April 24, 2009 (LifeSiteNews.com) – Three stars of the silver screen and the entertainment industry, looked up to and admired by countless children and teenagers, have sent a positive message to their fans about the homosexual lifestyle.

Statements from Britney Spears and Miley Cyrus were issued in the wake of the Miss America beauty pageant controversy, where Miss California’s Carrie Prejean was denied the competition’s crown and called a “dumb b*tch” by a homosexual judge for announcing her support for true marriage. (See: http://www.lifesitenews.com/ldn/2009/apr/09042103.html)

The judge, who calls himself “Perez Hilton,” has since been trying to gain support for his condemnation of Preejan from celebrities by asking them to weigh in on the issue.

Cyrus and Spears both responded to Hilton’s request for their thoughts on same-sex “marriage,” using messages broadcast on Twitter.com to condone the homosexual lifestyle.

“Love is love!” said Spears. “People should be able to do whatever makes them happy!”

Cyrus, who has a huge child fan base because of her star role in Disney’s “Hannah Montana,” told her fans:

“Jesus loves you AND your partner and wants you to know how much he cares! thats like a daddy not loving his lil boy cuz hes gay and that is WRONG and very sad! like I said everyone deserves to be happy.”

In related news, X-Men star Hugh Jackman, who plays the character Wolverine and is starring in the upcoming film “X-Men Origins: Wolverine”, told Parade magazine, in response to rumors that he is homosexual:

“I’d be happy to go and deny being gay, because I’m not. But by denying it, I’m saying there is something shameful about it, and there isn’t anything shameful.

“The questions about sexuality I find more in America than anywhere else, because it’s a big hang-up and defines what people think about themselves and others.

“It’s not a big issue in Australia.”
