James Dobson, the voice of conservative Christian group Focus on the Family since its inception, is leaving the organization’s flagship daily radio broadcast.
Focus on the Family spokesman Gary Schneeberger says Dobson will go off the air at the end of February. He said Friday it was a mutual decision of Dobson and the board, and that more details are forthcoming.
Dobson, 73, a strong voice in conservative Christian politics, has taken on a reduced role at Focus on the Family as part of a succession plan. He resigned as president in 2003, and as board chairman in February.
The evangelical group recently laid off staff because of a decline in donations.

Focus on the Family, James Dobson’s anti-LGBT empire and the largest organization in the religious right, announced earlier this week that it would be selling off its ex-gay therapy program called “Love Won Out.” The organization says it’s part of an effort to downsize in the wake of record profit losses of nearly $6 million. The news comes days after the nation’s largest psychological organization released a report condemning ex-gay therapies.

DENVER (AP) — Conservative evangelical leader James Dobson has resigned as chairman of Focus on the Family but will continue to play a prominent role at the organization he founded more than three decades ago, The Associated Press has learned.
Dobson notified the board of his decision Wednesday, and the 950 employees of the Colorado Springs, Colo.-based ministry were informed Friday morning at a weekly worship service, said Jim Daly, the group’s president and chief executive officer.

Richard Cizik, the longtime Washington lobbyist for the National Association of Evangelicals—the largest evangelical umbrella organization in the country, representing roughly 45,0000 churches—resigned Thursday after igniting a firestorm in the evangelical world by vowing support for gay civil unions in an interview with National Public Radio.
Cizik has faced years of criticism from the Christian right over his advocacy for combating global warming, with many conservative evangelical leaders questioning the validity of global-warming claims and mankind’s role in the process. Many of those leaders saw Cizik’s so-called “creation care” activism as a sign of him trying to liberalize a traditionally conservative agenda and distracting from such fights as stopping abortion and gay marriage.

In honor of Commercialism Day, or Black Friday to you capitalists, James Dobson has come out with a list of where not to shop. I have deliberately delayed producing this list in an effort bring some economic relief to other retailers. I realize that the good Doctor’s forces will most likely close certain retailers down, so, as an act of charity go ahead and shop at Best Buy and what ever you buy, go and head send it to me.
I wonder if Sarah Palin will listen to Jimmy D since Neiman Marcus is on the list as well?
From Dobson:
In April, Focus on the Family sent certified letters to the CEOs and marketing executives of 33 leading retailers inviting them to share their plans to generously use the term ”Christmas” in their 2008 catalogs and Web publications. We also requested information about their policies regarding in-store use of the term “Merry Christmas.”
In exchange for an early commitment to use the term “Christmas,” we offered to share their decision with our constituents early in the shopping season.
Eight of the 33 retailers replied with enthusiasm and stated their plans to generously use the term “Christmas.” In fact, a number of them intend to increase their use of “Christmas” this year.
The eight that plan to intentionally recognize Christmas are:
Best Buy
Cabela’s
Kohl’s
Lowe’s
Nordstrom
Pier 1 Imports
Toys “R” Us
Wal-MartWe trust these industry leaders will make good on their promise and publish “Christmas-friendly” material as they roll out their catalogs and Web sites. As you observe their “Christmas-friendly” approach, please thank them and patronize their stores. (We have included contact information at the end of this story.)
GAP, Banana Republic and Old Navy were also kind enough to send a reply but did not convey a clear commitment to use the term “Christmas.” Rather, they communicated their intent to approach their marketing in broad and diverse terms. We’ll have to observe and see if what they publish avoids an insulting marginalization of Christmas.
We have not received a reply from the following retailers:
American Eagle
Barnes & Noble
Bed, Bath & Beyond
Bloomingdale’s
Borders
Circuit City
Crate&Barrel
Dick’s Sporting Goods
Dillard’s
Eddie Bauer
The Home Depot
JCPenney
KB Toys
Kmart
Lane Bryant
Lands’ End
Linens ‘n Things
L.L. Bean
Macy’s
Neiman Marcus
Sears
Target

Sarah Palin has been associated all her adult life with churches and political groups that are way out of the theological and political mainstream. Her extreme policy views as Governor reflect this background and raise questions about what kind of vice president John McCain seeks to have voters endorse.
It has been widely reported that McCain barely knew Palin and his team never fully evaluated her to determine her fitness to be vice president.
A recent report in The Anchorage Daily News stated that evangelist Franklin Graham made the Palin connection to McCain, not Republican professionals. Graham, the once-estranged son of Billy Graham, has strong ties to the various strands of the religious rightwing. He met with McCain on June 30 at his headquarters in Boone, North Carolina, after which Graham issued a statement praising McCain’s “personal faith” and prayed for “God’s will to be done in this upcoming election.”
