Dan Wallace takes on The Myth of Theological Liberalism and maybe the SBL

Category: CriticismPolycarp @ 8:59 am

As remarkable as it may sound, most biblical scholars are not Christians. I don’t know the exact numbers, but my guess is that between 60% and 80% of the members of SBL do not believe that Jesus’ death paid for our sins, or that he was bodily raised from the dead. The post-lecture discussions are often spirited, and occasionally get downright nasty.

The annual SBL conference is a place where young scholars can present their papers, meet senior scholars, and talk to publishers about book projects. Great opportunities are at SBL! Master’s students meet with professors whom they’d like to study with for their PhDs. They make appointments, go out for coffee, or just happen to bump into them at the conference.

He goes to relate a story about treatment levied against one of his students by a scholar because of the student’s education at Dallas Seminary. Read the whole thing:

Product Description

This introductory-level book on Christianity looks clearly at what the church believed and taught throughout its history. Hard questions about the Bible, theology, and the Christian life are dealt with from the perspective of faith. As author, veteran scholar, and pastor James Howell puts it, “Great hope rests in thinking through these questions, and this book wrestles with them.” Howell knows the questions people ask and is adept at answering them. In doing so, he explores what it means to live as a Christian, as part of the church community, and also what it means to live with the hope Christian faith provides, even for those who “previously believed there was no hope.” Includes study questions for discussion.

About the Author

James C. Howell is Pastor of the Myers Park United Methodist Church in Charlotte, North Carolina. He is the author of a number of books, including The Beatitudes for Today and The Will of God, both from Westminster John Knox Press.

The Origin of Karl Barth

Category: Criticism, TheologyPolycarp @ 11:55 am

Many factors lead to Barth’s radical break with liberal theology. Two, however, stand out as especially noteworthy. First, Barth found that liberal theology was useless in his weekly task of preaching the gospel to the people of Safenwil. As a result, he undertook a careful and painstaking study of the Scriptures and through it discovered “The Strange New World Within the Bible,” to employ the title of one of his earliest articles. In the Scriptures he found not human religion, not even the highest and best thoughts of pious people, but God’s Wod: “It’s not the right human thoughts about God which form the content of the Bible, but the right divine thoughts about men….”

Orthodox Chancellor Blasts Liberals, Anglican Dean Upholds Faith

Category: Criticism, Doctrine, TheologyPolycarp @ 11:59 pm

Before anyone misunderstands, the ‘Liberals’ are those of liberal theology,

Speaking at the afternoon session of “In the Footsteps of Grafton and Tikhon”, the Very Rev. Chad Hatfield, Chancellor of St. Vladimir’s Seminary, ripped into liberal theological training. He was followed by Fr. Robert Munday, Dean of Nashotah House Seminary, who gave an uncompromising defense of the Church’s teaching on Faith, Order and Morals.
