Hath No Man Biblical Literacy?

Category: Religious NewsRobert J. Wilson @ 11:59 am

Some time ago, apparently to satisfy an intellectual masochistic streak, I subscribed to the e-mail newsletter of the American Family Association. This evening, I received a rather spectacular gem of a press release.

From Coram Deo Studios and Lionsgate comes No Greater Love, a feature film about a broken marriage, a sovereign God and a life-changing love.

(snip)

No Greater Love is a beautiful depiction of how loving God and loving others can bring the unlovable to Christ. In this film the church reaches out in love and with truthful correction. It’s a visible reminder that God is in control and His love is compelling.

>Sigh of unsurprised amusement<

The AFA and Coram Deo are clearly oblivious as to the source of their title. You all know the verse:

“Greater love hath no man than this, that he lay down his life for his friends.”

The type of love referenced in the verse is far from matrimonial; instead, the ‘greater love’ is the kind of literal sacrificial love exhibited by God when he played “I’ll kill mine if you’ll kill yours” with Abraham.

Being untrue to source material is nothing new for Hollywood films, but for an ostensibly Christian studio to release a Christian film and display such an obvious disregard for the semiotics of their title is…par for the course when it comes to “Christian” films.

Joseph, Husband of Mary

Category: DevotionalPolycarp @ 8:59 am

One of the most forgotten men in the Scriptures is Joseph, who was a man from the line of David who had  a certain Jewish girl espoused to him. He makes a small appearance in Matthew and Luke, the only two Gospels to record something about him. His name appears only a few times in all of the New Testament. It is only in Matthew’s work which we find him and his actions as any part of the story,

The One Thing that Needs No Interpretation

Category: DevotionalPolycarp @ 1:57 pm

I love theology, doctrine, biblical interpretation, biblical philosophy – taking verses, passages, books and wringing them of every drop of divine inspiration that I can; however, there is one thing that needs no more interpretation, just a lot more application:

Understood, Josh: Practicing what you preach

Category: Religious NewsPolycarp @ 9:59 am

Fellow blogger, Josh, has posted a wonderful story:

An Arkansas church hands out $5,000 to needy church members during series on giving:

The offering baskets at a North Little Rock church were operating in reverse. Summit Church on Sunday dished out $5,000 to needy members of its congregation. Pastor Bill Elliff says worshippers received cash to pay medical and electric bills, buy children’s school clothes, make a security deposit for an apartment and replace a broken washing machine.

Update on the Good Samaritan – He's not doing so well

Category: Religion and PoliticsPolycarp @ 7:59 pm

Originally from here:

A Crowd gathered around the broken form of a Young Man who was lying motionless on the roadside Moments before the Young Man was riding his bike down the street, when suddenly struck by a car. Dazed and confused, the Crowd looked around for someone to offer direction on what they should do.

Is this your presentation of Calvinism?

Category: Debate/DiscussionPolycarp @ 7:59 am

During the course of biblioblogging, I have met some real fine Reformed people. I am almost persuaded to explore Calvinism further – but I come across a video like this and I have to ask – is this what I am supposed to explore?

Is this how you would present the Gospel, if you were a Calvinist?

Does God Still Love the Wayward Christian?

Category: DevotionalPolycarp @ 7:59 pm

This post in response to a comment on another post. It is directed towards me as anyone, but I hope someone can get something out of it.

I am convinced that only the sin of apostasy – when we abandon and rebel against Christ – can separate us from Christ.

But what if we become wayward in our walk with God – what if we stumble and fall and begin to drift away? What if we are abandoned by the ministry, by the congregation, by others?

More than a few years ago now, I had recently been unceremoniously dumped by my fiancee. It tore me apart. Deeply. Wounded. I became angry with God, distrustful, separated from the holiness in God – by my hand – and gave up trying to serve God. I sought someone who was opposite of anyone that I had dated before. So, I found her. Well, long story short, we found ourselves pregnant – before marriage. In love, no less.

When Homosexuality hits Home

Category: HomosexualityPolycarp @ 11:59 pm

Frankly, we have a bad reputation when it comes to confronting those things which we believe are sin. I have seen people react badly – myself included – when told a family member is gay, and I have seen people react by not reacting.

I know someone who has been asked, when speaking to someone about this subject, ‘Do you have proof?’ You know, because the only proof are pictures of the act. People will continue to be hurt over this subject for a long time, unless we can find a way to treat each other in a Christian manner.

This article is for discussion purposes, let me say that I believe rejecting your son or daughter based on this lifestyle does more damage to them, and you, than you know. You do not have to accept their lifestyle as normal, or praise their lifestyle, but they are still your child, grandchild, parent, sibling, etc…

Those who have served in the booth for the Southern Baptist Convention’s Task Force on Ministry to Homosexuals have heard this question many times. This year’s annual meeting was no exception.

In fact, during this year’s meeting in Louisville, we heard this not only from those who stumbled upon our booth, but also from those who came to the exhibit hall looking specifically for us.
