Christian Vision for Men – Real men find Church too girly

Category: Religious NewsPolycarp @ 11:59 am

Thanks to Stuart for this tip:

Times:-

Real men don’t like going to church because they don’t want to “sing love songs to a man”, because the “vicar wears a dress”, because they feel like “mongrels on parade at Crufts” and because they want to be waited on by women rather than queue for coffee after the service.

A number of distinctly non-pc ways to get men back into church are among those being advocated by a charity, Christian Vision for Men, which has discovered that the Church has lost nearly half of its men aged under 30 because it has become too feminine.

Bene Diction takes on Quiverfull

Category: Religious NewsPolycarp @ 11:50 am

Recently, during private conversations, I believe that I have identified two separate understandings/movements of Quiverfull. One supports large families, and acknowledges that it is not for everyone, seeing it as a call. Further, this group are interspersed among various denominations and congregations. The husband-wife relationship is not a master-slave relationship, but a Traditional understanding of family headship.

The second group are better called the Patriarchal Quiverers which has an extreme view of the husband-wife relationship, and extreme view of the intrusion of society (such as medicine), and an extreme few of large families – taking literal the charge in Timothy about child-bearing.

Maybe I am wrong. Anyway,  Bene Diction Blogs On on this subject

Quiverfull? Full of Kids, at least: Duggers to have 19th child

Category: Gender IssuesPolycarp @ 3:39 pm

I didn’t know if I wanted to post this or not, but since it does have something to do with religion, I figured I might. (I always enjoy a good conversation.)  While speaking with our midwife the other day, she informed us of the dangers of this many children (no, 3 should be about enough for us). Some of the extreme dangers of Quiverfull, which is a movement located generally in the United States, include death to the mothers – but there are also extreme views on the relationships between the husband and wife.

I have watched, a little, of the Duggers on TLC, and have not see the extreme views of what other women in this movement have described, but it is still disconcerting, at least for my wife and I, to learn of the dangers of this many childbirths.

What say ye?

The Man who took the Woman's Family Name

Category: NehemiahPolycarp @ 11:59 pm

As I reading Nehemiah, I came across this interesting verse:

Three families of priests– Hobaiah, Hakkoz, and Barzillai– also returned. (This Barzillai had married a woman who was a descendant of Barzillai of Gilead, and he had taken her family name.) (Neh 7:63 NLT)

Why do you think he did that and why do you think it escaped condemnation from Nehemiah?

Jason, Why did you have to go there?

Category: Holiness, Other PostsPolycarp @ 7:59 am

Jason is in trouble. Either that, or he’s on a roll. Here are two posts from yesterday, check them out.

On Public Nudity:

When man was created he was naked.  Once he sinned he recognized that he was naked, and felt shame.  That began the clothing industry.  The first designer was not DKNY, but YHWH.  Several others have attempted their hand at the design business since YHWH created his first “fall” line (pun intended), but frankly, I’m not so sure YHWH approves of their designs.

The only thing that I would like to add – Jason should have included men in bikini briefs as well.

And on those pesky question askers:

Why is it that when someone challenges a traditional teaching/practice, he is often labeled as “divisive” or a “troublemaker,” and is summarily dismissed?  It may be true that the individual has a divisive attitude or is acting in a troublesome manner, but the attitude in which he dissents or questions a particular doctrine/practice is separate from the arguments he presents against it.  Someone may be the biggest jerk on the planet, but their attitude has nothing to do with whether their arguments are valid, and their beliefs correct.  Simply pointing out their bad attitude does not answer the question of what is true, nor does it excuse us from interacting with their arguments.  Labeling and dismissing those who question the mainstream view is often just a power play, usually employed by those without a rebutting argument.  It’s a way of avoiding discussion, and having to defend their own point of view.

The Mainstreaming of Polygamy – Part 3

On any given day, Pat Merkley helps clients with everything from registering for Social Security and accessing housing to providing marriage counseling to women trying to bring harmony to their polygamous family’s home.

My Womb for His Purposes: The Perils of Unassisted Childbirth in the Quiverfull Movement

Category: Gender IssuesPolycarp @ 7:59 pm

As a reminder, the Quiverfull movement is limited to the United States, and is new – by that alone, I question it’s merit to be called a Christian movment.

In the last week of June, two different circles of blogs invested in the Quiverfull movement—both as critics and supporters of the pro-natalist, patriarchal, conservative Christian lifestyle—focused on the sad news of the death of one Quiverfull mother’s child shortly after birth. The woman was Carri Chmielewski, author of the now-private blog “Carri Me Away,” where she described her Quiverfull lifestyle, eschewing contraception, having as many children as God gave her, submitting to her husband’s leadership, and, in a related conviction common among Quiverfull adherents, her plans to deliver her children through unassisted childbirth—a home birth with no doctors, nurses, or midwives to help her and her husband through labor and aftercare.

Read the rest here.

What do you think – do you think that a potental danger to the woman is within God’s plan?

Mainstreaming Polygamy

Category: MormonismPolycarp @ 10:56 am

Of the past year, I have noticed that non-fundamentalist Mormons, and even non-Mormons, as starting to speak in near favor of polygamy (Husbands having more than one wife, not women having more than one husband, I mean, we have to have standards and all.) During a recent conversation on this blog – no I am not linking to it – the commentator suggested that polygamy is no longer allowed by the LDS because ‘our’ religion makes it against the Law. Further, suggests that polygamy is easily biblical, because we have patriarchal examples of it (I mean, sure, while Abraham is our example of Faith, would you really follow his moral example complete?)

I realize that this is not the view of many Mormons. I know several Mormons, and they are generally of a very respectable character, Glenn Beck notwithstanding. This is not a slight against them, nor a slight whatsoever, just an exploration of the mainstreaming of polygamy.

So, in the interesting of that commentator, I am posting a link to a story that hit the newswires earlier this week. This is a young family, a man who is married to one sister, officially, and one unofficially. They have children, friends, and seem to be generally pretty public about their lifestyle.

To me, while polygamy is entirely unbiblical, it is also something rather, well, selfish. You know what we call men with two wives or partners right? Lucky. Brave. Bold. A man’s man.

You know what we call a woman with multiple husbands or partners?

Mormon sisters share a husband

While sisters are known for their love of sharing, Mormon siblings Katie and Priscilla Churcher have chosen to share more than most in their choice of husband Travis.
