Church Fathers on Universalism
‘Fire and Brimestone’ has not always been a part of Christianity. Deep inside, I suspect that many today remain hopeful for universalism, but hold to the doctrines of Hell. It is interesting to note that as part and parcel with the development of the Logos Christology of Justin Martyr, and the 3rd century Alexandrians, that the idea of an eventual restoration of all things developed as well.

Call for Submissions: Patristic Carnival XXIX
Welcome to Patristic Carnival XXIX. This month, we’re over at The Church of Jesus Christ blog again. Thanks to Joel (Polycarp) for taking this month. I’ve been very appreciative of the efforts of both Joel and Rod in taking the last few Patristic Carnivals as I deal with my excessively busy fall. Thanks very much. You are gentlemen and scholars!.The guidelines remain the same as the Modest Proposal entry back in November, 2006 and my additions in August, 2007.
The last day of submission will be October 31 and the postings will be up in the week of November 6th.
Remember you can offer submissions on the carnival site or the dedicated e-mail (patristics-carnival@hotmail.com)

Patristic Carnival XXVIII
Looks great, Rod!
Check out the Patristic Carnival:
Welcome to Patristic Carnival XXVIII hosted by Political Jesus! I would like to show my gratitude to Phil for giving me permission to host the carnival this time around. I would also like to give an honorable mention to Joel Watts for inspiring the format for this carnival. I am indebted to all of my church history professors who opened up the eyes of this once “Baptist/Protestant-tradition onlyist” and helped me to see the rich tradition of the theology of the early church Fathers and Mothers.

Patristic Carnival XXVII
Welcome to Patristic Carnival XXVII. I want to think Phil, who normally hosts this blog, for the opportunity, rather, the honor and the blessing to host it this month. Since blogging, I have gained a rather deep admiration for the Church Fathers.

Athanasius on the Great Physician
For whereas man sinned, and is fallen,
and by his fall all things are in confusion:death prevailed from Adam to Moses,
the earth was cursed,
Hades was opened,
Paradise shut,
Heaven offended,
man, lastly, corrupted and brutalised cf.Psalm 49:12,
while the devil was exulting against us—
then God, in His loving-kindness,
not willing man made in His own image to perish,
said, ‘Whom shall I send, and who will go?’
But while all held their peace,
the Son said, ‘Here am I, send Me.’
And then it was that, saying ‘Go Thou,’
He ‘delivered’ to Him man,
that the Word Himself might be made Flesh,
and by taking the Flesh, restore it wholly.
For to Him, as to a physician,
man ‘was delivered’ to heal the bite of the serpent;
as to life, to raise what was dead;
as to light, to illumine the darkness;
and, because He was Word, to renew the rational nature.– St. Athanasius, On Luke 10:22

Some of the Posts I Missed Today
I was out all day, working, and didn’t get to read my daily dose of blogs – so, I thought that I might read a few now and share some with you. By the way, I am now collecting a retirement fund so that I can sit and read blogs all day long. Please feel free to donate.
