Dave Black on Radical Reconciliation

Category: Religion and PoliticsPolycarp @ 11:31 pm

3:37 PM One of the tribes I hope against hope to be able to revisit either now or in July are the warlike Gujis who live next to the Burjis. Since my preaching tour in Gujiland a couple of years ago I’ve developed an even greater appreciation for Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount and His teachings about peace-making, love of enemy, and kingdom ethics. I say this as one who formerly sympathized with the religious right and its false gospel of neoconservative ideology. (Phyllis Schafly once said, “The atomic bomb is a marvelous gift that was given to our country by God.” At one time I would have found nothing objectionable in her statement.) The Bible I read speaks of radical reconciliation. My evangelical theology assures me that no tribal conflict is beyond the reach of the redemption that is found in Christ Jesus. Please pray that I will be able to revisit this precious tribe whom God loves and for whom His Son died.

Christian Legitimization of the Assassination of President Obama

Category: Religion and PoliticsPolycarp @ 12:00 am

ohiochristiansLast week, as the sniper shot rang out mortally wounding President Obama, the country woke up to the historical fact that idle words are indeed the devil’s playground. History will long note  and judge those, who while the ambulance was attempting to carry the dying man to the nearest hospital, surrounded the vehicle, only to have the Secret Service fire into the crowd, wounding several, killing one. Some of the protesters stood idly by, crouched in prayer, not for the life of the man on the stretcher, but for the death. With angry shouts of ‘Death to the Muslim’ and ‘I want my country back’ ringing in his ear, the 44th President of the United States passed from this life.

A Week in the life of the Religious Right

Category: Religion and Politics, Religious News, Rick WarrenPolycarp @ 8:12 am

I have to wonder how different the election might have been had the religious right stood as a single group behind one man, say, Mike Huckabee. Of course, it might have turned out different had their campaign tactics not included a great deal of hate (remember the guy who wants God to rain out the DNC? Or the letter from 2012?). The problem that I have with the Religious Right is that has as it’s primary goal political power, and look what politics has done to the leaders? Politics is a dirty busines, and those involved in it usually come out covered with sludge. But, I doubt any of the leaders really care about that…

1. Religious Right Power Brokers Endorse Ken Blackwell for RNC Chair

Some of the leading figures in the Christian right, including honchos James Dobson and Tony Perkins, joined hands through the Council for National Policy’s political advocacy arm, CNP Action, to endorse former Ohio secretary of state and failed 2006 gubernatorial candidate Ken Blackwell to chair the Republican National Committee.

Sarah Palin and the New Apostolic Reformation – Guilt by Association

Category: Religious NewsPolycarp @ 10:24 am

Remember Todd Bentley…Remember Lakeland

via The Free Press — Independent News Media – Election Issues

Sarah Palin has been associated all her adult life with churches and political groups that are way out of the theological and political mainstream. Her extreme policy views as Governor reflect this background and raise questions about what kind of vice president John McCain seeks to have voters endorse.

It has been widely reported that McCain barely knew Palin and his team never fully evaluated her to determine her fitness to be vice president.

A recent report in The Anchorage Daily News stated that evangelist Franklin Graham made the Palin connection to McCain, not Republican professionals. Graham, the once-estranged son of Billy Graham, has strong ties to the various strands of the religious rightwing. He met with McCain on June 30 at his headquarters in Boone, North Carolina, after which Graham issued a statement praising McCain’s “personal faith” and prayed for “God’s will to be done in this upcoming election.”
