Rick Warren Going Broke? Seeks Urgent Donations

Category: Rick WarrenPolycarp @ 1:23 am

Wow:

Evangelical pastor Rick Warren is begging parishioners at his Southern California megachurch to cough up $900,000 before Jan. 1 to keep the parish out of the red.

In an urgent letter posted on the Saddleback Church Web site on Wednesday, Warren says expenses are up because parishioners are out of work and “the bottom dropped out” when year-end donations dropped dramatically.

He asks parishioners to donate before the new year to keep the Orange County church out of debt.

A spokeswoman for Warren said the church does not release financial details, so it’s difficult to put the $900,000 shortfall in context.

Warren delivered the invocation at the inauguration of President Barack Obama and is the author of numerous books, including the best-selling “The Purpose Driven Life.”

Does Rick Warren Support Domestic Violence?

Category: Rick WarrenPolycarp @ 9:56 am

According Rick’s brother-in-law, who is a teaching pastor at Saddleback, domestic violence is defined as a series of beatings. From here:

Kathryn Joyce has a typically insightful article at Double X, on attitudes to domestic violence at Rick Warren’s Saddleback Church. She quotes some audio clips of Teaching Pastor Tom Holladay (who is married to Warren’s sister), who explains that domestic abuse means regular beatings, not a one-off attack, and that a woman is never justified in seeking a divorce on grounds of violence:

“There’s something in me that wishes there was a Bible verse that says if they abuse you in this and such kind of way then you can leave them,” said Holladay, but sadly, he concluded, there wasn’t.

The author that the above post refers to the story of a woman who because she separated from her husband because of divorce, and filed a police report, she was frozen out by Saddleback – especially when her husband, a former Pentecostal minister, joined the ‘Baptist’ Saddleback.

Read the whole thing here; Kathryn deftly guides us through the wider context of marriage teaching and wifely submission within conservative evangelicalism.

I have to agree with Dr. West in saying that this goes beyond the pale and should be denounced. I denounce the teaching that says a woman must submit to beatings by her husband – it is Scriptural unsupported, Traditionally unsound, and simply out, of grave error. It treats women as second class citizens, bound to her husband regardless of abuse, perhaps even to the point of murder.

We know assuredly that the Lord did not condone spousal beatings, for we are commanded by the Apostle Paul, we as husbands, to treat our wives as the Lord treats the Church. She is His Bride and I cannot think that the Lord Himself would beat the Church.

Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord. For the husband is head of the wife, as also Christ is head of the church; and He is the Savior of the body. Therefore, just as the church is subject to Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in everything. Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself for her, that He might sanctify and cleanse her with the washing of water by the word, that He might present her to Himself a glorious church, not having spot or wrinkle or any such thing, but that she should be holy and without blemish. So husbands ought to love their own wives as their own bodies; he who loves his wife loves himself. For no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as the Lord does the church. For we are members of His body, of His flesh and of His bones. “For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.” This is a great mystery, but I speak concerning Christ and the church. Nevertheless let each one of you in particular so love his own wife as himself, and let the wife see that she respects her husband. (Ephesians 5:22-33 NKJV)

We debate so much the great things, the Godhead, the sacraments, the nature of the regeneration, but too often we leave the health of families waning, separating them in Sunday School, and at events, never seeking to draw them closer.

My grandfather told me once, of an event in the small town of Kentwood, Louisiana, at the opening of the last century, in which the town found out that a certain individual beat his wife, among other things. One night, the men of the community showed up at his doorstep and ‘discussed’ a few things with this man about his husbandly duties. After the ‘discussion’, the man never laid another finger on his wife, nor stepped out, no, as far as anyone could tell, said a cross word to her and his children. Now, these were baptists, of the Southern Variety.

A few things bring my blood to a boil – racism, sexism, and stupidity. It seems that Rick has scored two out of three. Why is he still allowed a respected voice?

Purpose Driven magazine debuts – Rick Warren is the new Oprah

Category: Religious News, Rick WarrenPolycarp @ 6:07 pm

LAKE FOREST, Calif. (BP)–Rick Warren has joined with Reader’s Digest Association to produce a quarterly magazine called “Purpose Driven Connection,” which is intended to reach people who aren’t connected to churches.

“PDC magazine is all about transformation, not merely information. That’s what sets this magazine apart from many others. It is the purpose behind every word,” said Warren, pastor of Saddleback Church in Lake Forest, Calif., and author of The Purpose Driven Life.

The premier issue, which debuted in January, has exceeded expectations in sales, Larry Ross, a spokesman for Warren, told Baptist Press.

“Rick Warren is a big visionary, and this is one of the most ambitious projects he has ever undertaken,” Ross said, noting that Warren serves as editor in chief of the project. “… Gallup and Barna have both done studies that show that 19 percent of the U.S. population, about 59 million people, has read The Purpose Driven Life.

Rick Warren wants us to be Hitler Youth

Category: Joel's Army, Rick WarrenPolycarp @ 8:44 am

On April 17, 2005, at the southern California Anaheim Angels sports stadium thirty thousand Saddleback Church members, more than ever gathered in one spot, assembled to celebrate Saddleback’s 25th anniversary and listened as Rick Warren announced his vision for the next 25 years of the church: the P.E.A.C.E. Plan.

Bruce Wilson has written this article and it bears reading.

Rick Warren forms own denomination – Offers a home for Anglicans

Category: Religion and Politics, Rick WarrenPolycarp @ 8:02 am

A few minutes ago, I received a letter from Saddleback’s Rick Warren, who many conservative Anglicans realize has been extremely supportive of their cause.

Here’s what he wrote in part to a handful of leaders:

… [The Episcopal Church has] already considered me an adversary after partnering on projects with Kolini, Orumbi, and Nzimbi, and writing the TIME bio on Akinola.

But since last summer… I’ve been on Gene Robinson and other’s attack list for my position on gay marriage. ….[Our] brothers and sisters here at St. James in Newport Beach lost their California State Supreme Court case to keep their property.

We stand in solidarity with them, and with all orthodox, evangelical Anglicans. I offer the campus of Saddleback Church to any Anglican congregation who need a place to meet, or if you want to plant a new congregation in south Orange County.

The St. James parish is not giving up its court case and has plans to seek other legal remedy. In the meantime, other conservative Episcopal congregations or Anglican church planters might be eager to take pastor Rick up on his offer.

Rick Warren pulls anti-gay language from his Web site

Category: Religion and Politics, Rick WarrenPolycarp @ 8:44 am

I have no problem with people with convictions – whether they are right or wrong, Atheist, Pentecostal, or Catholic – but stick to them if you really hold them. It seems that Rick has suddenly removed a portion of his website after the controversy started. Remember, John Hagee did the same thing when he was faced with controversy. If these are real convictions, then they should either hold to them or explain why they change.

Warren says he has 'many gay friends'

Category: Religion and Politics, Rick WarrenPolycarp @ 8:58 am

LONG BEACH, Calif. – The first openly gay member of Congress said Sunday it was a mistake for President-elect Barack Obama to invite evangelical pastor Rick Warren to deliver the invocation at his inauguration.

“Mr. Warren compared same-sex couples to incest. I found that deeply offensive and unfair,” Rep. Barney Frank, a Massachusetts Democrat, said in a broadcast interview.

“If he was inviting the Rev. Warren to participate in a forum and to make a speech, that would be a good thing,” Frank said. “But being singled out to give the prayer at the inauguration is a high honor. It has traditionally given as a mark of great respect. And, yes, I think it was wrong to single him out for this mark of respect.”

Under fire for opposing gay marriage, influential evangelical pastor Warren said Saturday that he loves Muslims, people of other religions, Republicans and Democrats, and he also loves “gays and straights.”

This might be the first boo that Obama gets from a crowd. From what I can tell, the base of Obama is just as upset with him as the base of Warren’s is with him.

Gay Activists Decry Pastor’s Role in Swearing-In

Category: Religion and Politics, Religious NewsPolycarp @ 8:17 pm

The Rev. Rick Warren, a conservative evangelical pastor, has been tapped to deliver the invocation at President-elect Barack Obama’s inauguration – and gay rights advocates are not happy about it.

The Joint Committee on Inaugural Ceremonies announced today that Mr. Warren, of Saddleback Church in Orange County, Calif., and author of “The Purpose Driven Life,” would lead the opening prayers at the swearing-in ceremony. Though he is a prominent figure among religious conservatives, Mr. Warren invited Mr. Obama to speak at an 2006 AIDS summit he held at his mega-church, over the objection of abortion foes. Now, Mr. Obama is facing sharp criticism from part of his base for inviting Mr. Warren.

I wonder what this says about Rick and Obama? And is Rick replacing Billy Graham? Of course, Rick has to be better than Eugene Robinson…
