Quote of the Day: Absorption of Violence

The current essay, which I will post on next week, has a theme running through it which I am unaware – but find palatable.
Thought this quote might sum it up –
“…sin-caused violence is intercepted by Jesus Christ. Shalom is the result, but its purchased price is the total self-giving of the deity, the absorption of violence.” (p43)
Martens is making the point that we are to absorb violence as Christians.
I haven’t read this review, but you might. (I don’t want other reviews to cloud my reading).

Many attribute this to 19th century theologian, August Tholuck. While I have many of his first (English) edition works, I haven’t read them all. He strikes me, however, as a wonderful write. Maybe when I have the time… but the quote here, attributed to him, is:
There is not a more repulsive spectacle than on old man who will not forsake the world, which has already forsaken him.
I reckon we could apply this to friends, associations or even old congregations…
