A New (to me) Theoblog – Galadriel’s Mirror

The author of this book has a blog, although admittedly, he hasn’t posted on it for a while.

This blog make no claim to be oracular (see the forthcoming post on “The Internet as Oracle”). I make no pretense to having mystical powers like Galadriel. But I do like the idea of a blog providing discussions that challenge and test the hearts and minds of those who click on the site to have a look. It appears to me that a blog serves (quite insufficiently!) as a “table”–a table over which friends and strangers banter as though with coffee mug in hand over matters both important and whimsical.

I prayerfully hope that “Galadriel’s Mirror” @ abyers.wordpress.com will offer conversations (both bidden and unbidden!) that penetrate the interlocutors and readers and inspire us to stay the course, namely, the Course that is straight, narrow, and most costly. And most rewarding…. (here)

Galadriel’s Mirror.

Now, with his upcoming book, let’s hope he returns to blogging….

Two of the Biblioblogging Papers Presented at #SBL10

First, from Jim Davila:

Sixth and finally, I think it is fair to say that biblioblogging has contributed at least a little to the accelerating erosion of the authority of the mainstream media. My earlier two papers collected many examples and you can find many more in posts on many biblioblogs since 2005.

Read the entire paper about the progress that Biblioblogging has made. You know my story, of course, but read the details.

Then, Chris Brady,

The anomaly of Jim West

Speaking of Jim I should note the significant variant of Jim West’s blog. The latest iteration is called “Zwingli Redivivus” and while Jim West regularly posts on issues related to biblical studies, he also has various humor posts, rants against the “depraved,” and wikipedia. The volume he produces is considerable and the number of hits his site receives has kept his blog #1 on the Biblioblogs monthly Top 50 since its inception. It is, however, quite the exception.

If the others post theirs, I’ll link to those as well.

SBL: The Sessions, Preliminary Schedule, if I don’t become a lemming

Can you spot Jeremy Thompson?

Can you spot Jeremy Thompson?

I will be attending only but a few days – Sunday and Monday. Just enough, really, to get a few sessions in and attend the 2nd Annual Biblioblogger dinner on Sunday night. I have a roommate who is too embarrassed to know me and asked me not to reveal who he or she is. (I’m trying to use more inclusive language, although, there are times that I really don’t know the gender of my roomie).

Anyway, there are plenty of sessions that I want to attend at the 9am-11:30 section, but that means I would have to leave my house at midnight. If I don’t make it for that….

I’ll start my day at 1pm. I most likely will attend P21-214 International Organization for Septuagint and Cognate Studies (they are the ones who translated the New English Translation of the Septuagint).

Then, rushing from there, I’ll attend between 4-6:30 p21-318 Functions of Apocryphal and Pseudepographal Writings in Early Judaism and Early Christianity Section. The theme for this section is 1st Enoch.

Let’s just be honest here – Throw in Septuagint, Deuteronomy, Wisdom or Deuterocanonical and I’m there.

Monday morning’s going to be tough… but most likely, I’ll end up at Wisdom and Apocalypticism in Early Judaism and Early Christianity Section/Qumran Section.

And of course, without question (okay, so a lot because Larry Hurtado is presenting on early Jewish monotheism too) the Biblioblogger section – s22-209

I’ll end my time at SBL with the Markan Literary Sources Seminar, which will feature Adam Winn as a presenter.
