WikiLeaks Release Imminent – U.S. World Standing in Jeopardy?

I don’t usually post on Sunday beyond the usual, but… this story really has me concerned. If there are lives at risk, should these leaks be stopped (can anyone)? But on the counter, what about the lives which may be saved because Governments have to act more responsible? Further, are we about to become intimately aware of the way our Government has been operating for a few years (more than the last two)? I think we are.

“The material that we are about to release covers essentially every major issue in every country in the world,” he told reporters in Jordan by video link when asked if the new leaks again focused on U.S. wars in Iraq and Afghanistan….

….

The cables are thought to include candid assessments of foreign leaders and governments and could erode trust in the U.S. as a diplomatic partner.

Crowley said the release will place “lives and interests at risk. We are all bracing for what may be coming and condemn WikiLeaks for the release of classified material. It will place lives and interests at risk. It is irresponsible.”

Diplomatic cables are internal documents that would include a range of secret communications between U.S. diplomatic outposts and State Department headquarters in Washington.

This is one of those times that a citizen should sit back and wonder what type of government do we really have? And, to what level are we, the American public, really knowledgeable about international relations… We sit here and watch as the tensions rise on the Korean Peninsula. Will we one day learn that governments were behind this?

The world is about to get scarier and brighter.

Petraeus Condemns Plan To Burn Qurans: ‘It Could Endanger Troops’

Let’s remember as well that Gen. Petraeus took the same line against Israel and their antagonism towards the Palestinians,

“It could endanger troops and it could endanger the overall effort,” Gen. Petraeus said in an interview with The Wall Street Journal. “It is precisely the kind of action the Taliban uses and could cause significant problems. Not just here, but everywhere in the world we are engaged with the Islamic community.”

Now, Mr. President, Get us out of Afghanistan Now

As the Rev. Jim Lewis has said, via Facebook,

The Pentagon Papers leaked the truth about the Vietnam War. Now Wikileaks, an international whistle-blowing organization, has released over 90,000 secret documents revealing our failure in Afghanistan with details on US cover-up of civilian deaths. Face it, our political and military leaders have lied to us. This decep…tion is unacceptable. This is now Obama’s war. He must show courage and get troops out NOW.

Read the Maddow Blog as well as Jim West‘s.

The New York Times all but says “Good morning, Vietnam,” calling the classified papers an “Unvarnished Look at a Hamstrung Fight.” In the U.K. Guardian, “Massive leak of secret files exposes truth of occupation.” And in Der Spiegel, “Explosive Leaks Provide Image of War from Those Fighting It.”

We are losing troops daily and national prestige. We are ‘nation building’ which is against the original mission, and which isn’t support by either Afghanistan or Pakistan. It is being revealed that we are covering up war crimes, essentially giving money to terrorists and have strengthened the Taliban. This war has gone on long enough.

I voted for President Obama because I thought that when it came to situations like this, he would do what was right. This is the moment in which he must lead. He rightly complains that the previous administration ‘got us into this mess’ but in this situation, he is doing nothing to get us out and only pushing us further in. The War Dairies provided by Wikileaks only go to December 09, but what they are revealing should make every American cringe.

Pray for our leaders, write to your Congressional Delegation and demand that we stop this.

Christianity and the Caste System in Afghanistan

This is an excellent article (the link at the bottom) on a current issue in the war-torn country of Afghanistan:

They embraced the religion of their invaders to escape the caste system that had condemned them to a miserable existence. But Karlos Zurutuza reports on how, centuries later, Christians in the Taliban stronghold of Quetta are once again becoming ‘untouchables.’

Afghans Throw Stones at Women Protesting Rape in Marriage Law

Dozens of young women braved crowds of bearded men screaming “dogs!” on Wednesday to protest an Afghan law that lets husbands demand sex from their wives. Some of the men picked up small stones and pelted the women.

“Slaves of the Christians!” chanted the 800 or so counter-demonstrators, a mix of men and women. A line of female police officers locked hands to keep the groups apart.

The warring protests highlight the explosive nature of the women’s rights debate in Afghanistan. Both sides are girding for battle over the legislation, which has sparked an international uproar since being quietly signed into law last month.

The law says a husband can demand sex with his wife every four days, unless she is ill or would be harmed by intercourse. It also regulates when and for what reasons a wife may leave her home without a male escort.

Aid worker killed for spreading Christianity, says Taliban

via The Hindu : International : Aid worker killed for spreading Christianity, says Taliban

Gayle Williams, aid worker who was shot dead in Kabul.

Kabul: Taliban gunmen killed a Christian aid worker in Kabul as she was walking to work, and the militant group said it targeted the woman because she was spreading her religion.

The dual South African-British national, who worked with handicapped Afghans, was shot to death on Monday by gunmen who drove by on a motorbike in western Kabul, said Interior Ministry spokesman Zemeri Bashary.

The Taliban claimed responsibility.“This woman came to Afghanistan to teach Christianity to the people of Afghanistan,” militant spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid told The Associated Press. “Our [leaders] issued a decree to kill this woman. Yesterday morning our people killed her in Kabul.”

The aid group SERVE Serving Emergency Relief and Vocational Enterprises identified the woman as 34-year-old Gayle Williams.

A spokeswoman for the group in Kabul denied that its workers were proselytising, which is prohibited by law in Afghanistan. “It’s not the case that they preach, not at all,” said Rina van der Ende.

In a statement on its website, SERVE described Ms. Williams as “a person who always loved the Afghans and was dedicated to serving those who are disabled.”

The group describes itself as a Christian charity registered in Britain. The website says it has been working with Afghan refugees since 1980 in Pakistan. “SERVE Afghanistan’s purpose is to express God’s love and bring hope by serving the people of Afghanistan, especially the needy, as we seek to address personal, social and environmental needs,” the site says.
