The SBL New Testament?

Jeremiah woke me up early this morning with news that the SBL is coming out with a critical text for the Greek New Testament. We think.

You can find the website here…

Does anyone have any clue about this?

SBL Blogger and Online Publication Section Announcement and Call For Papers

SBL Blogger and Online Publication Section

Originally organized under the aegis of the ‘biblioblogging’ community, this SBL unit has been renamed. ‘Biblioblogging’ refers to a diverse community of nearly every point of view that communicates new ideas or insights, debates, and discusses exegetical and historical subjects. The Blogger and Online Publication Section supports the publication of articles, commentary, and items of interest relating to the Bible and biblical studies online using blogs, social media sites, online journals, and other Internet or web-related vehicles, and promotes communication between bloggers and the SBL.

Dan Wallace takes on The Myth of Theological Liberalism and maybe the SBL

As remarkable as it may sound, most biblical scholars are not Christians. I don’t know the exact numbers, but my guess is that between 60% and 80% of the members of SBL do not believe that Jesus’ death paid for our sins, or that he was bodily raised from the dead. The post-lecture discussions are often spirited, and occasionally get downright nasty.

The annual SBL conference is a place where young scholars can present their papers, meet senior scholars, and talk to publishers about book projects. Great opportunities are at SBL! Master’s students meet with professors whom they’d like to study with for their PhDs. They make appointments, go out for coffee, or just happen to bump into them at the conference.

He goes to relate a story about treatment levied against one of his students by a scholar because of the student’s education at Dallas Seminary. Read the whole thing:

On Joining the SBL, Search Terms and Odds and Ends

I’ve joined the SBL this evening, finally. I will not be able to attend much, if any, of the SBL this year for various reasons. (Namely, I have a meeting scheduled beyond my control on Friday, and my daughter as a doctor’s appointment to look at a growth on her neck on Tuesday). I am still going to the blogger’s dinner, of course. I mean, when John posted something about books, and I realized that with SBL membership, you get 40% off the SBL titles, well…

Dr. Jim Linville Wants to Destroy the Society of Biblical Literature

Well, maybe not destroy it, but….

1. Promote scholarship of the Bible from a non-religious viewpoint.

2. Produce scholarly critiques of religionist biblical scholarship, and how it functions to maintain the authority and value of the Bible in the modern world.

3. Form a counterweight to the Evangelical Theological Society, and perhaps engage in cordial dialogue and debate with its members through written formats and through joint sessions. (see here as well)

I get what he is trying to, destroy the Bible, wreck Christianity, cast doubts, and make Jim West get a cat, but others do not. As far as I can tell, no one has said anything else about it.

Personally, I do not believe in Dr. Linville, and believe that his blog is part myth, legend, and ANE folklore, redacted daily for socio-religious agendas.

Michael speaks: SBL Sunday Lunch & Sage Journals

Michael Halcomb is calling for a lunch on Sunday, informal, inexpensive and he relates that Sage is free for the next month.

Hello friends, I just wanted to add a quick post to Pisteuomen today mentioning 2 things. The first is that a group of us biblio/biblica bloggers are planning to get together for an informal lunch, Sunday the 22nd at SBL in New Orleans (no, this is not to react against Jim’s meal gathering but rather, to provide an additional, less formal and perhaps, less expensive, chance to meet-up). If you are interested in joining us, let me know and I’ll post the list here after several more have opted-in.

Also, I wanted to let everyone know that the journal powerhouse “SAGE” is currently offering a month’s worth of free journal access to anyone who wants it. You can register for free and access journals like JSNT, BTB, ET, etc. Here’s the link: Free Journal Acess.
